Cathedral of the Blood, Yekaterinburg

This place is a must-see for anyone who's into history or architecture. The Cathedral of the Blood in Yekaterinburg is a real head-turner - it's like nothing you've ever seen before. The way it blends styles is both fascinating and somber, and it's a powerful reminder of the city's complex past and the impact it's had on its people. I mean, just walking through the doors is a humbling experience. The cathedral's got a lot of character, and it's clear that a lot of thought and care went into its design.

Hello
Traveling to new places and exploring new cities is a great way to recharge and get out of your daily routine when you're feeling burnt out. I've always found that a change of scenery is just what I need to refresh my mind. Last year, my family and I went to Kazan in October, and this year, I spent some time in Yekaterinburg. I've been to Yekaterinburg before, as I used to study there, so I know the city pretty well. However, even when you've been somewhere before, it's amazing how much you can rediscover when you haven't been there for a while.
One of Yekaterinburg's iconic landmarks is the Church on Blood, which I'll be talking about in my review.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Yekaterinburg, Tsarskaya St, 10 open daily from 7:00 to 23:00 free admission built in 2003
HISTORY
I think many people are aware of the tragic events that unfolded in the final days of the Romanov family. Nicholas II and his entire family, including his wife and children, were executed in Yekaterinburg, at the Ipatiev House. Their bodies were later moved around the city and its surroundings, and reburied in various locations, with several different versions of where they were finally laid to rest. However, one thing is certain: they were executed in the house, which was later demolished and replaced with a church dedicated to the memory of Nicholas II and his family.
The house had stood since Soviet times, but as interest in the site grew, it was decided to demolish the house, which was done accordingly.
Later, in the 2000s, a church was built on the site of the house.
INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR
The church is beautiful, majestic, and somber. You can't help but think about the tragedy that occurred here, the last moments of Nicholas II and his family, and the horror they must have experienced. According to our guide, all 11 shooters were aiming at Nicholas, so he died instantly, and when the gunpowder settled, they finished off the poor children and women. It's a chilling image that comes to mind.
There's also a real room of horror in the church, of course, in a figurative sense. Just take a look.
I have to admit, even looking at the photos, it's a bit unsettling. That's the exact spot where the execution took place. The energy there is heavy, and I just want to get out of there.
Inside, the decor is classic for an Orthodox church, with icons.
The church is reached by 23 stairs. The same number of Romanovs took in their last journey to the basement of the house.
Impressions from visiting
What hits you in this place is undeniable. Before the entrance, there's a memorial to the royal family, and looking at it, you can't help but feel tears welling up. You imagine that final scene, the smoke dissipating, and the princess, the grand duchesses, and the young tsarevich realizing their father/husband is dead, and that they'll be next. You imagine the blood spilled, which is so poignantly highlighted by the red room.
But another thought inevitably comes to mind. What started the Romanov dynasty? A little hanged boy (son of False Dmitry II, I think) - it marked the end of the Time of Troubles and the beginning of the Romanov dynasty. How did the Romanov dynasty end? With the execution of innocent children and the tsarevich, the heir to the dynasty. It's horrific, because essentially, the Romanovs started with the death of children, and that's how they ended - with the death of children. And it's as if the children were to blame for what their ancestors had done. This sin wasn't washed away and fell on the last tsarevich. Although the Romanovs weren't directly involved in the death of that boy, it was the gray cardinals who did it. But over the centuries, it all passed down, I suppose...
These thoughts keep swirling in my head to this day, whenever I think about the Church on Blood, some other places connected to Yekaterinburg, and the royal family.
My Verdict
I definitely recommend visiting the Church on Blood. It's a place where you detach from everything, learn about history, think about the eternal, life, and death, and how the sins of the parents fall on the children, sometimes even through generations.
Thanks for your attention!
The real test came when I used it for a week straight, and I'm happy to say it still felt snappy. The build quality was actually one of the things that surprised me the most - it's seriously solid. I mean, the buttons feel like they're going to last forever, and the battery life was way longer than I expected. I was worried I'd have to charge it every day, but it easily lasted two days on a single charge. That's a big plus in my book. And let's not forget about the customer support - I had a question about the return policy, and their team got back to me within hours. That's top-notch service if you ask me.
