Unpacking the Dark Side of Wuthering Heights: A Haunting Tale of Love and Obsession

summarizeEditor's Summary

I finally gave in to the hype surrounding the upcoming adaptation of Wuthering Heights and decided to read the classic novel for myself. I'd been fascinated by the book for ages, and I was eager to understand what all the fuss was about. As I dove into the world of the Brontë sisters, I found myself drawn into a complex web of love, obsession, and tragedy. The gothic setting and complex characters kept me on the edge of my seat, and I loved how the book's unique format added to its charm. The soft cover, newspaper-style pages, and miniature size made it easy to toss into my purse, and the 149 rubles price tag was a total steal. But what really set this book apart was its ability to evoke strong emotions in me. I found myself laughing, crying, and feeling a deep sense of empathy for the characters. If you're a fan of classic literature or just looking for a compelling read, Wuthering Heights is a must-add to your list.

A unique take on the classic series
I stumbled upon this unique format for the Bright Pages series at Chizhik, and it's quite appealing at 149 rubles. The soft cover, newspaper-style pages, and miniature size make it easy to fit in my purse.
The most striking thing about this book is its dark and playful pink cover. Maybe the author, Emily Brontë, wanted to prevent readers from getting too depressed by the book's content.
The Plot
I won't go into the entire plot, as most of you are already familiar with it thanks to the upcoming adaptation's trailer, which has been heavily criticized. Let me give you the short version. It all started with the Earnshaws and the Lintons. The head of the Earnshaw family brought home a little orphan boy, Heathcliff. No one in the family accepted him, and after the owner's death, Heathcliff ended up in the house as a servant, getting mistreated and beaten all the time.
But soon, the girl's attention was caught by a young man from the neighboring estate - Edgar Linton. That's how this tragic story begins.

The Characters
The main characters in this book are people with damaged psyches. While everyone else is shocked and calling Catherine and Heathcliff monsters, and the author of this novel is deemed crazy, I personally managed to take one thing away from all this. No one's surprised that all our traumas come from childhood. What kind of childhood did Catherine and Heathcliff have? Just horrific. Especially for the latter. That's why I felt a deep sympathy for these two characters first and foremost, and only then for Edgar Linton and his family.
Catherine Earnshaw
Unlike Heathcliff, she's not a psychopath. But her personality is still unbalanced. As she grows up, Catherine eventually realizes she can't have it both ways. And even though she wants to be with the 'dirty' Heathcliff, she's more drawn to the handsome aristocrat Edgar. But thanks to, or in spite of, her character, this choice cost her dearly. The thing is, Catherine was extremely aggressive towards almost everyone. And if she wanted something, she'd stop at nothing, threatening or charming her way through.
Catherine's respect and her husband Linton's are two completely different things. I mean, she's never shown any respect to her husband, and if you read how she treats the servants, you'd hate her even more. And don't even get me started on her constant tantrums - even as an adult.
So, what do you think of Catherine's character? But that's just the tip of the iceberg. Because now it's time to talk about Heathcliff.

Heathcliff
I've already described Heathcliff's childhood, and based on that, you can probably guess why he turned out to be such a brooding loner. He's got a tough streak, no empathy, and a healthy dose of narcissism - all classic traits of a psychopath. And his go-to move? Revenge. And let me tell you, Heathcliff is really good at it. It's around this time that Catherine starts to forget about her friend Heathcliff.
True feelings or just an unhealthy obsession?
Some people think there was real love between the two main characters in 'Wuthering Heights'. I'm not sure where they got that from. To me, it was just a trainwreck. Maybe those readers who are a bit too close to the characters can see it that way.
I have to say, narcissistic, selfish, and cruel people who are experts at manipulating others just can't handle the beautiful feeling of love. And I'm not just talking about the main character here. I think a lot of people have had a tough time with these 'Hartcliff' types who claim to have feelings for someone, but ultimately make their partner suffer. In the novel, Hartcliff chose someone who's his equal, and it's only natural that the people who get hurt are the ones who aren't on his level.
The Gothic Elements
It's no surprise that Wuthering Heights is classified as a Gothic novel, despite not being overtly spooky or supernatural. But as the story reaches its climax, I got a strong feeling that this book was cursed, and that the devil himself was writing it (excuse me, Emily Brontë).
Even the descriptions of the stormy moors, the nightscapes, the graveyard, and Hartcliff himself give me the chills. I'm still not sure how I managed to finish this book.
Conclusion
The only thing I liked about this novel is its conclusion. At least it gave me a chance to catch my breath. If I had to go through all that emotional turmoil again, I'd probably have gone crazy like Catherine Earnshaw.
Verdict
If you're a fan of gothic novels, I highly recommend checking out Storm of Swords. The sense of hopelessness, the dark landscapes, the unhealthy obsession, the negative characters, the supernatural forces... it all really sends chills down your spine. And the main characters are just brutal and ruthless.
Reading this stuff is seriously terrifying. It's like watching a supernatural thriller. I thought I'd give King a try, but now I'm not so sure I need to.
Overall, I would give this book 2 out of 5 stars. While it was a classic and a must-read for many, it didn't quite live up to my expectations. The characters were complex and well-developed, but their actions and motivations were often hard to understand. The plot was engaging, but it was also predictable at times. The writing style was beautiful, but it was also a bit too flowery for my taste.
Despite its flaws, Wuthering Heights is still a great book that I would recommend to fans of gothic novels and classic literature. Just be prepared for a wild ride of emotions and a story that will leave you feeling unsettled and disturbed.
