When Creativity Goes Off the Rails

summarizeEditor's Summary

I'm still reeling from my binge-watching session of 'Women's Business', a crime drama that promised much but delivered little. As a fan of the genre, I was initially stoked to dive in, but the show's illogical plot twists and absurd character actions left me frustrated and disappointed. The series follows Dina, a young investigator, as she navigates her job and personal life, but the creators' attempts to push boundaries fell flat for me. The show's biggest misstep was its handling of interrogation scenes, which veered into ridiculous and disturbing territory. If you're a fan of crime dramas, you might want to approach 'Women's Business' with caution. The show explores some timely and thought-provoking themes, like the complexities of women in the workplace, and the actress playing Dina does a great job of conveying the character's vulnerability and determination. However, the show's pacing is uneven, with some episodes feeling rushed and others feeling slow. The character of Dina is inconsistent and sometimes makes decisions that don't feel true to her personality. Overall, the show's attempts to be edgy and provocative often fall flat, and the themes and messages are sometimes muddled and unclear.

When Creativity Goes Off the Rails
I just finished binge-watching the show 'Women's Business' and I wanted to leave a review while the emotions are still fresh. I've got some thoughts to share, especially since I have some criticisms to get off my chest.
As a fan of crime dramas, I was initially excited to dive into 'Women's Business', but unfortunately, the show failed to live up to my expectations. The series follows the story of Dina, a young and ambitious investigator, as she navigates the complexities of her job and personal life. While the show has its moments, I found myself constantly frustrated with the illogical and absurd plot twists that seemed to pop up out of nowhere.
One of the biggest issues I had with the show was the way the creators handled the interrogation scenes. It seemed like they were trying to push the boundaries of what's acceptable in a crime drama, but ended up coming across as ridiculous and disturbing. Take the scene where Dina has to get intimate with a banker just to serve him a summons, for example. It's just absurd. And to make matters worse, she's still a virgin at the time. I'm thinking, if they're going to make her do this every time they need to get a high-profile witness to testify, where are they going to find all these innocent girls? I mean, come on. It's just absurd. And if we're being serious, couldn't they have found a more civilized way to get the guy to cooperate? I get that it's a work of fiction, but there have to be some boundaries, right?
But the thing is, this isn't the only time they've pushed Dina's boundaries to the limit. The creators have basically used her as a prop throughout the series. I mean, she's undressed in the interrogation room just to get a guy to talk (because, you know, that's exactly what you need to do to get a confession). She's stripped down in the middle of the investigative unit (because, apparently, that's a thing). And she's even initiated intimate relationships with suspects on her own initiative - twice, no less. And considering Dina's not exactly the most stable person, and the people around her are supposed to be professionals, it all just looks really weird and disturbing.
I'm not sure what the writers were thinking when they came up with this plot twist, but it's clear they wanted to make the story more complicated than it needs to be. The lack of logic in the episode where Dina, who's weak and not exactly the most capable person, is tasked with protecting a potential victim from a serial killer is mind-boggling. Everyone involved understands that the killer is going to try and kill her - it's already obvious at this point. I mean, you'd be hard-pressed to find a less effective bodyguard than Dina in the entire department!
In contrast to Dina, who has sex with men because it's part of her job, the other main character, Irina, enters into intimate relationships with men because she wants to. And let me tell you, the list of guys who've slept with her in the past 16 episodes is getting pretty long...
To be honest, I think what sets 'Women's Business' apart is the incredibly high level of acting, plus the show's technical quality is top-notch. You can really see the difference when compared to some other modern Russian historical dramas.
I also wanted to mention one aspect of the show that really stood out to me - and it's something I noticed from the very beginning. I'd mentioned earlier that one of the two main characters, Dina, struggles with autism. And what I love about the show is how these scenes where Dina asks her mentor and colleague, Irina, seemingly weird questions, really turn the world upside down.
When Dina asked her questions in her signature straightforward way, it got me thinking: is it me who's crazy, or is it us who've grown accustomed to living in a reality that's considered normal? But is that really the case? Is it normal for society to be the kind where we've gotten used to lying to each other, doing it automatically, without even thinking about it, without even noticing? Everyone knows we're lying to each other, but hey, that's just how it's always been... Is it normal to base our behavior on what others think, rather than our own desires? I'm not saying the show tackles those philosophical questions head-on, no, they're just touched on briefly, in passing. But the fact that they're even brought up, and the thoughts they spark - that's interesting.
One of the positive aspects I'd like to mention is the humor - there's not a lot of it, but it's there. It's a bit of a relief from the otherwise intense and dramatic plot. I also appreciated the way the show explores the complexities of Dina's character, particularly her struggles with autism. It's a refreshing change of pace from the usual portrayal of characters with autism in media.
The Verdict
I'd say there are enough good things about the TV series 'Women's Business' to make it worth watching. But, honestly, the absurdity of many of its episodes is off-putting. One thing I can say for sure: if this is what real-life investigators are up against, they've got my sympathy...
