A Charming Coleus Companion: Wizard Mosaic Review

summarizeEditor's Summary

I'm a coleus fan, and the Wizard Mosaic Coleus has won me over with its stunning, multicolored leaves. The variety of colors and overall appearance are impressive. I appreciate the low-maintenance nature of coleus plants, making them perfect for indoor spaces or gardens. While the seeds were tiny, they germinated well, and the plants have thrived. I've paired the Wizard Mosaic Coleus with other coleus varieties, and it looks great. However, the color scheme isn't as varied as I expected from the product image. Still, it's a beautiful addition to any space, and I'm happy with my purchase. The value for money is great, especially considering the 2-pack cost me just 62 rubles. I'll definitely be buying more coleus varieties in the future. One thing I love about coleus plants is how easy they are to care for. They don't need a lot of water or special lighting, making them perfect for busy people or those who are new to gardening. I've had my Wizard Mosaic Coleus plants for a few weeks now, and they're still going strong. I've noticed that they do best in bright, indirect light, so I've placed them near a window. I've also fertilized them regularly to keep them healthy and thriving.

A Charming Coleus Companion: Wizard Mosaic Review
Hello there!
I've got a soft spot for coleus because of their low-maintenance nature. I've had a few different varieties, but this mosaic Wizard Coleus was a new one for me. The picture really caught my eye, so I decided to see how it would do in practice.
The Wizard Mosaic Coleus is a beautiful addition to any garden or indoor space. Its unique, multicolored leaves add a pop of color and create a stunning visual effect. I was impressed by the variety of colors and the overall appearance of the plant.
I picked up the Wizard Mosaic Coleus from Sima-land. I liked the color scheme in the product card. The 2-pack cost me 62 rubles.
The packaging was standard, with a clear plastic envelope containing the seeds. The packet included a description of the variety and sowing instructions. I appreciated the detailed information and the clear instructions on how to sow the seeds.
The seeds themselves were small and looked like dust. I made a few small holes in the potting soil, then gently dropped in a seed and covered it lightly with soil. I used store-bought potting mix for indoor plants and a cardboard disc from Dodo as the pot.
I sowed the Wizard Mosaic Coleus seeds in mid-March. For the first few days, I kept the pot in a shaded area, but I just placed it near the kitchen sink. Every morning, I gave it a quick water spray. For the first 3 days, I covered it with plastic wrap, aluminum foil, or a mesh bag to reduce water evaporation.
After about 5-6 days, the seeds started to sprout. Another week or so, and you'll see noticeable seedlings. Around 3-4 weeks, the green leaves will start to show off their vibrant, multicolored patterns.
I ended up with 15 plants from the two packets, which I think is a decent amount. For a garden bed, it's more than enough, but for pot-grown plants, one packet might be sufficient.
About a month after sowing, I transplanted the seedlings into a planter. Since it has a double bottom, I don't need to use keramzit, and excess water just drains out.
I planted them pretty densely, which I like. I enjoy when the foliage bursts out of the pot in a lush clump or a neat head.
From my experience, coleus has no problem with overwatering. It's so thirsty that it can thrive in a glass of water, so I can easily save on keramzit. Once the nights get warmer, I move the planter to the balcony. I'll bring it back inside in the fall.
I love pinching my plants to encourage bushy growth, but on an open garden bed, I prefer a more natural look with straight stems. Pinching the top of the coleus is super easy – I usually do it with my thumb.
When you pinch the stem, the sap doesn't irritate your skin, and it doesn't stain it either. You can start pinching when the stem reaches 10-15 cm in length. You can repeat the process after some time.
Coloration is almost identical to what's on the packaging, but I'm still a bit disappointed. The leaves on the picture are more vibrant, with more red-violet patches. My coleus is a bit paler, and it has fewer speckles. Compared to the packaging and other coleus varieties like Black Dragon or Scarlet Wizard, this one is pretty basic. I think it's a good companion plant for more vibrant varieties, but on its own, it's a bit dull. I'll keep it for contrast in a pot with other varieties, though – I think it'll look great.
Coleus is the perfect plant for a garden bed. The variety of colors allows you to create a vibrant and contrasting look. I've seen some great examples of this in our city, and I really like it. I don't have experience planting nettle in the open ground, so I keep it in a planter on the window or balcony.
I like keeping coleus on the balcony windowsill. It's a warm-loving plant, and if the temperature drops below 10°C, it can die. Last year, I forgot it on the balcony as the seasons changed, and it froze. The stem turned dark in some places. So, in open ground, coleus works like an annual, while in indoor conditions, it's a perennial. As for the frozen coleus, it died, but not completely. I cut off the living top and put it in water to root. In this regard, coleus is perfect for beginner gardeners.
Lighting requires plenty of sunlight. A sunny spot with some shade is ideal. This will give you the most vibrant color on the leaves. However, in deep shade with insufficient light, don't expect a beautiful pigment. Unfortunately, my coleus gets direct sunlight for about 4 hours a day. The worst part is that it gets scorched and wilts, and the leaves curl up, but only until evening. With the sun setting, the stem and leaves perk back up.
Watering should be generous, especially if the adult plants are densely planted. The root system of nettle is quite powerful and dries out the soil quickly.
Fertilization is not required. At least, I've never fertilized it. The color is indeed affected by the amount of light, but also by the freshness of the soil. Otherwise, coleus is extremely low-maintenance.
Overall, I liked the coleus from Seeds of Altai: good germination, easy care, interesting color that's almost identical to what's advertised, although not as varied as the picture shows. I would have liked more red pigment on the leaves. Otherwise, it's perfect. Wizard Mosaic is ideal as a companion plant for more vibrant coleus varieties. I highly recommend it.
