Why's the Maned Wolf So Grumpy?

Elena Feldman's novel is a real page-turner - I was hooked from the start. The way she explores the maned wolf's behavior is both fascinating and thought-provoking. With its engaging storyline and well-developed characters, this book is a must-read for anyone interested in animal behavior and the natural world.

Why does Mom fart? - a book that had me chuckling

summarizeEditor's Summary

I was introduced to this book through a group of friends who were searching for the artist behind a popular meme character. The author's search led to a lovely collaboration with another illustrator, resulting in adorable 'kitty' illustrations. My six-year-old daughter loves reading books in verse, so I decided to give it a try. The illustrations are indeed lovely, and the story is engaging, making it a great value for money. I'm glad I made the purchase, especially since my daughter enjoys reading it with me. We've had some good laughs together, and it's a great way to encourage her love for reading. The book's price is reasonable, too - around 170 rubles, although it did go on sale for under 150 rubles briefly. The price has since gone back up to 200 rubles, but it's still a decent value. I bought it on VTB, and the article number is 371267064. I've read the book with my daughter multiple times, and it's become a bedtime favorite. The story is fun, the illustrations are cute, and it's a great way to bond over reading.

We've had a long story with this book. I'm part of a group where people are always on the lookout for new things, and the author was searching for the artist behind a popular meme character a few months back. Unfortunately, we couldn't figure out who the artist was, but another illustrator did step in and drew the 'kitty' illustrations for this book. When the search was closed with a report that the book had been released, I decided to order it because the illustrations are lovely, and my six-year-old daughter loves reading books in verse.
At first, it seemed like a fun story, and the price is pretty reasonable - 170 rubles for the book. I thought, 'why not?' I bought it on VTB, and the article number is 371267064.It later went on sale and cost just under 150 rubles, but now it's back up to 200. Still, the price isn't too high, even with the extra 50 rubles that get added or taken away. This book is still pretty fresh, from last year, and I'm glad I have it.
My kid was so excited to see this book that she started reading it right away. She's still a bit young, so she read it to herself, but she couldn't help but share the title with me: "Why Does Mommy Snore?". She read it for a while, and then she shared the whole story with me out loud. We both ended up laughing so hard that the store clerk joined in. Now, every time I see this little book, it makes me smile. This book is pretty big, at 25x25 cm, but it's also super thin, with only 32 pages. It came wrapped in a clear plastic bag, which didn't do it any favors during shipping. We got it with some creases on the front cover, but since it's a kids' book, I'm not too fussed. My kid is still learning to handle books gently, so it's bound to get some bumps and bruises. If it were a more expensive book, I'd be more upset, but for the price, I'm willing to overlook it. Still, it would be nice if the manufacturer paid more attention to packaging.
This book is super colorful and stands out on my bookshelf. However, the covers are a bit wonky, and you can see that the middle is slightly puffed up. I thought maybe my kid had crammed it in there, but it looks like it's just a wonky print job. It's not too noticeable, but it's definitely there. Maybe it'll flatten out if I pack it in tightly with the other books.
The story is pretty small, but it's all in rhymes, which makes it easy to read. I think it's suitable for kids as young as two, to be honest. The idea is that someone's asking themselves why the manul's getting all grumpy: maybe it's bored, maybe it's too many people, maybe it's too few, or maybe it's something entirely different?..
The punchline is coming soon, in about five minutes of reading with a grown-up. Or when the kid finishes reading it themselves. The font is pretty big, so I think even a young reader can handle it. It's hard to spoil kids' books, anyway, because they tend to fall in love with certain things and watch/listen to them over and over again, without worrying about the plot being familiar. I genuinely chuckled at the punchline the first time I read it - the manul's reason for being grumpy is just like most moms of still-growing kidsThe illustrations are lovely, too. The manul's got a lively personality and a cute, fluffy appearance.
I've got to say, the book itself is pretty well-made. If the pages were a bit thicker, it would be worth every penny, but then the price would be higher. Considering it's a budget-friendly edition, I'm not going to nitpick about the paper quality. Even the cover flaps are colorfully designed, right down to the feline theme – if it's clean, it's because it's meant to be that way.
And that's the bottom line?
We both loved the story, and the illustrations are great too. My daughter enjoys carrying it around for me to read, since she's not quite old enough to read it herself – she's still getting the hang of recognizing the title.
I'd give the book's quality a four out of five. I don't often come across books that bend or warp, and that's a pet peeve of mine. The pages inside are a bit thin, but the hardcover is sturdy and glossy. Unfortunately, the packaging from the manufacturer could use some improvement.
What else should we read together?
My daughter isn't too fond of me reading to her – my idyllic vision of a romantic bedtime story has been shattered by harsh reality, but she does have some favorite books that we've almost worn out:
"разныа луна" - the first book that my kid just fell in love with, 1+"Восставшийи из грядки" - a poem book for those who can't stand veggies, 3+"Беспокойная гульница" - a stunningly beautiful botany book, but the story is way too simple, 2+"Спыщая красавица" - the most beautiful edition I've ever held. I bought it when I found out I was pregnant, figuring I had to read it to my kid, 4+Don't feel like reading? Watch instead!
"Колобок" - a sweet, modern adaptation of a classic fairy tale, drawn in a Russian style. My daughter knows it by heart 0+"Репа" - not perfect, but very colorful and funny, 3+"Крошечка-Хаврошечка" - the first horror story for the smallest kids. It's a classic adaptation with death and a cow-eating twist, but my daughter loves it, 5+
