Radiation therapy was a tough road, but it's a journey I'd rather not think about. When cancer hits, you don't have a choice - you've got to face it head-on. My experience with radiation therapy was a rollercoaster of emotions, but I'm here to share what I learned along the way. Diagnosis: I got some bad news - stage 1 cervical cancer, specifically squamous cell carcinoma, with a G2 aggressiveness level (moderate). Not exactly what I wanted to hear.
Before Radiation Therapy: I'd already had a hysterectomy with lymph node removal (check out my previous review at the end for the full story).
During Radiation Therapy:
My radiation oncologist prescribed 4 sessions of intravaginal brachytherapy at the Nuclear Medicine Center in Kazan - a place I'd rather forget.
I was an outpatient, so I'd head in on Tuesdays and Fridays in the morning for my treatments. I'd bring a pad and 6-7 condoms, which they'd use to insert the device into me - it's a weird feeling, let me tell you.
On the first day of treatment, I had a check-up and measurement to make sure the intravaginal sensor was properly fitted, taking into account the shortened 'blind pouch' - it's a bit of a tricky situation.
The procedure takes place behind thick steel doors to protect the medical staff from radiation - it's a good thing, considering what they're dealing with.
In my case, I'd immediately go into the treatment room, lie down on a straight-backed bed with a headrest, leg holders, and a metal holder in the center where they'd attach the sensor with wires to deliver the radiation, so it wouldn't move inside me - it's not the most comfortable feeling.
I'd have blood and urine tests every 7 days to keep an eye on my condition - not exactly the most fun part of the process.
Side Effects:
Dizziness - it's a real thing, and it's not fun.Pain in my joints - not exactly what I wanted to deal with.Urination problems and kidney pain - a real pain, literally.Severe but short-lived headaches - not something I wanted to experience. My pulse would spike from 40 to 140 beats per minute - talk about a rollercoaster ride.Issues with my stomach and digestive system (though I already have gastritis and esophagitis) - just what I needed, more problems.Unpleasant sensations in the groin lymph nodes area - not exactly what I wanted to feel.Cataract formation (initial stage) - not exactly what I wanted to hear.Let's just say I'm not looking forward to going back.
My urine analysis on discharge was pretty poor. My hemoglobin dropped by 12 units, lucky it was initially 136 - a bit of a wake-up call, to say the least.
I was expecting the worst, but it turned out to be better than I thought.
Read about my hysterectomy experience in my other review.
