What You Need to Know About VPR Prep for 4th Graders

Hey there! You might know that nowadays kids in school don't just take the EGE after 11th grade, but also the OGE after 9th. To be honest, I thought that was it, but when my kid moved to 3rd grade, I found out they'd be taking the VPR the next year - that's the annual checkup for 4th graders. And then I learned that these VPRs are an annual thing, with a new subject added each year. We used to write those end-of-year checks for most subjects, but now they've changed format. There's also a surprise with VPRs: one of the subjects you'll be taking is a secret until the last minute. For example, in 4th grade, you'll definitely take Russian and math, and the third subject could be anything from Environment to Literature or English.

In our school, we don't have a 'VPR prep' subject, but the teacher chooses a time for the kids to practice VPR, and they work on some tasks under the teacher's supervision, getting at least a basic idea of what VPR is all about. We bought VPR prep books, and they're all kept in school so the kids won't forget them at home - each kid needs to work in their own book.

One evening, I thought to myself: why not work on VPR prep with my kid? That's when I bought the Math Trainer for VPR Prep 4th Grade, created by Anna Nikolaevna Alekseeva. This book is published by BAKO, and we've had our fair share of their books and trainers - some were even bought in school, and the kids worked on them. I like these books: they're all pretty similar, with a soft cover, A5 format, but a bit narrower and longer than a regular notebook.

The book has 96 pages and includes the state educational standards. It's been re-published a few times, and our 2025 edition is the one we're using.

The trainer opens with an introduction from the creators, where they explain what's being tested in different VPR sections for math in 4th grade, and how the scores are calculated. When I first started flipping through the book, I didn't even flinch - the first sections are just regular calculations, nothing too complicated. There aren't any crazy examples like you'd find in a regular math textbook.

However, the third section threw me off. I saw assignments in there that I'd never seen in our math textbook before. A 10- or 11-year-old should be able to navigate a map, calculate time down to the minute, and understand how to count items in a receipt. This doesn't mean every kid will get a task on understanding distance or navigating a receipt, but the third section has a wide range of questions. You've got to be prepared for anything.

My kids, for example, still struggle with regular clocks. They've been looking at digital clocks since they were little, and even though we have an analog clock at home, when I ask them what time it is, they get stumped. My son even came up with a way to tell time backwards – he'll say things like 'the 25th hour of the 4th.' So, the questions that require kids to be able to tell time on both analog and digital clocks are a challenge.

The fourth section of the test is focused on using a calendar and understanding how to plan your time. There are some easy questions in here, but also some tougher ones. Kids in 4th grade should also be able to use tables.

The geometry section is just one question, so you'll only see one geometry question on the test. Again, some kids will get an easy question, while others will get a tougher one. It's all about being prepared for anything.

I was surprised to see there's even a question on understanding mirror images.

One thing that struck me when I dove into the tasks was how much they require not just basic math skills, but also logical thinking. In the additional tasks section, it's clear that the focus is entirely on logic puzzles – no math required at all.

The final section includes the correct answers to every question, which is super helpful.

After using this resource, I realized that preparing for the VPR requires a serious approach – the math itself is relatively straightforward, but the questions are designed to test your ability to apply logic in real-world situations. The Ministry of Education expects kids to be able to navigate maps, understand time formats, read calendars, and more by the time they're 10 or 11. Thankfully, we still have some time to prepare, and I think this math trainer for VPR prep in 4th grade will be a valuable resource for us.
