Hello fellow outdoor enthusiasts! I'm still buzzing from our recent weekend getaway to the Olkhinsky Plateau Nature Reserve, where I got to hike to the iconic Vityaz Rock.
Exploring the Vityaz Rock Formation in the Irkutsk Region
After millions of years of weathering, the unique rock formations in the Irkutsk Region, specifically the Vityaz Rock, have been shaped by the natural forces in the area. The southeastern part of the rock formation resembles a warrior's profile when viewed from the Olkh River.
I've been visiting this incredible rock formation since my student days when I was into rock climbing. It's a popular spot among rock climbers and outdoor enthusiasts, with a height of around 40 meters.
Located about 60 kilometers from Irkutsk, the rock formation is easily accessible, but the route can be tricky to navigate, especially for first-timers. To get there, you can take the train to Orlenok or Tрудный station, then follow the trail on foot, following the signs.

As you hike along the Olkh river, you'll notice that the trail is pretty straightforward, but there are some sections where the path branches off and you could easily get lost. The route is about 7 km if you take the road, but if you take the trail through the forest, it's a bit shorter at 5 km, with some steeper climbs.

Review of the "Vityaz" rock, Irkutsk regionI haven't been on this trail in years, and it's amazing how much has changed. There are now these adorable little benches and picnic tables near the spring. It's great to see that people are collecting water from the spring for drinking.

Review of the Vitязь rock climbing site in Irkutsk OblastI was surprised to find no cell service on Vitязь. I did get a few bars of signal on the upper trail.
Review of the Vitязь rock climbing site in Irkutsk OblastI used to compete in rock climbing competitions on Vitязь during my university days. I even participated myself. Vitязь has 19 prepared routes with drilled-in holds. One of the most challenging and thrilling routes, "Karniz" (7B+/7C), requires serious climbing skills.
Review of the Vityaz scaler, Irkutsk OblastWhat to consider on a hike?
I definitely like to check the weather forecast beforehand - it's way more accurate than it used to be a few years ago. We spent ages deciding whether to go for a walk or not, given the forecast was calling for a short shower.
Luckily, I'd packed a spare set of clothes, because what hit us was a full-on downpour - I've never seen anything like it. We got absolutely soaked in just 20 seconds, barely had time to grab our rain jackets from the backpacks.
Review of the Vityaz scaler, Irkutsk OblastThe hailstones were about 2-3 cm in size and really hurt.
Review of the Vityaz scaler, Irkutsk OblastMy head was saved from the hail by my hat - a lifesaver, I'd say! Moral of the story: don't forget your hat at home!
Review of the Vityaz scaler, Irkutsk OblastWe took the lower trail back and, as it turned out, it was the safer option - the upper path might have been slippery.
Review of the "Vityaz" Scalpel, Irkutsk RegionI've gotta say, the aftermath of the storm was pretty wild. The whole road was littered with broken branches and leaves. The air was filled with this crazy perfume smell - I'm guessing the plants were releasing their essential oils as a defense mechanism. The road was basically a lake in some spots, so we had to take a detour through the woods. Just as we were getting to the station, the sun came out and a magical mist rolled in.
Review of the "Vityaz" Scalpel, Irkutsk RegionThe scenery was a real balm to our souls after that crazy storm. We got to the station, dried off, and had a hot meal to warm us up. By the way, you're not allowed to have campfires in the woods - the fire department has a zero-tolerance policy.
We learned to use dry firewood instead, and we even got some company from a local dog who was hoping we'd invite him to join us for dinner. We ended up waiting for the train with a couple of tourists who were just getting off, and some local "entrepreneurs" who were out picking wild herbs. We finally got on the train and headed home, drying out our clothes like monks.
Review of the Vityaz scaler, Irkutsk regionI highly recommend taking a hike on the Olkhinsky plateau for some amazing views!
