A Major Disappointment: 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona' Falls Flat

summarizeEditor's Summary

I'm a sucker for a handsome Spaniard, but Javier Bardem's charm couldn't save this movie from its flat, unemotional storytelling. The cinematography's gorgeous, but the rest of it just didn't deliver. I was expecting some spice, but the characters' conversations are boring and the erotic adventure never materializes. Javier's still got it, but I'm not looking for movies just to see him anymore. The film's got all the ingredients, but somehow, it just doesn't come together. It's a shame, because the setting and the leads are pretty great. But in the end, it's just a bunch of empty calories.

A Major Disappointment: 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona' Falls Flat
I'm a sucker for a handsome Spaniard, and Javier Bardem's got that whole 'older and wiser' thing down pat. But let's be real, I was expecting a lot more from 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona'. The movie's got all the ingredients: a hot guy, beautiful young women, flirting, seduction... But somehow, it just doesn't deliver.
Meet Vicky and Cristina, two friends on a vacation in Spain. They're walking, chatting, having lunch, and enjoying the architecture. Of course, they're drinking a lot of wine. But as the story unfolds, I found myself checking my watch. The characters' conversations are flat, unemotional, and just plain boring.
I was expecting some spice, some erotic adventure. But Javier's supposed to show off his Spanish charm, and unfortunately, it just doesn't happen. Everything's there - a hot guy, young and beautiful girls, flirting, seduction... But it's all so bland and dry.
The cinematography's gorgeous, but the rest of it just didn't do it for me. Javier's still got it, but I'm not looking for movies just to see him anymore. I'm not sure if I've just grown out of this film or what, but I think I would've loved it when I was 20 years younger.
So, who's the target audience for 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona'? I'd say it's probably just young women under 30, but even that's a stretch. It's a film about a love quadrangle set against the stunning backdrop of Spain, with a pseudo-sensitive and positive (but really egotistical) male lead. Not my cup of tea.
Here's the deal - I'm not a fan of this storytelling style. The characters' dialogue is there, but it's not engaging. They're flat, unemotional, and uninteresting. Maybe it's not the conversations that are the problem, but the plot?
I'm sure the movie is supposed to make you think: about love, your hidden desires, making the right choice, following your heart and your mind, the fleeting nature of life. But trust me, you already know all that. The movie won't give you any new insights, aesthetically, emotionally, or physically.
It's empty, plain and simple. I've got to say, the one thing that really stood out to me in this movie was Spain. A little bit of Barcelona's architecture, a few shots of Spanish villages - it was all just so beautiful. I've never been there, but I've always dreamed of visiting this sunny corner of Europe.
The movie's got all the right ingredients, but somehow, it just doesn't come together. Maybe it's just me, but I think I would've loved it when I was 20 years younger. The strings of my heart would've been playing in harmony, but now it's just not the same.
