A Surprise Olympic Experience in Venice

summarizeEditor's Summary

Venice, a city I'd always wanted to revisit, exceeded my expectations. We spent a few days at Lake Garda and then headed to Venice, where we were lucky enough to stay for a bit longer than my previous visit in 2008. Our hotel was right next to the famous Rialto Bridge, and we were treated to a surprise Olympic experience that was truly unforgettable.

We spent a few days at Lake Garda and decided to head to Venice, a city I'd always wanted to revisit. This time, we were lucky enough to stay for a bit longer than my previous visit in 2008.
We left our car at the parking lot and took the water bus to get to our hotel.
Our hotel was right next to the famous Rialto Bridge. We hadn't even had a chance to drop off our bags when we saw a commotion near the bridge.
We were a bit confused at first, but then we checked our phones to figure out what was going on.
It turned out that the day we arrived in Venice, January 22nd, 2026, was the day the Olympic torch relay was passing through the city. The Winter Olympics were just around the corner, and we were excited to be a part of it, even if it was just as spectators.
It all started right outside our hotel. A guy in a white sports jersey was standing there, holding the Olympic torch.
My friend was holding the torch, but it was flameless for now. He was waiting for the flame to be handed over to him.
We were at the Spar shop buying chocolate when we came out to a shock – a guy with the Olympic flame was running past us. We were thrilled and joined the massive crowd following him.
The crowd kept growing and growing. We headed to another bridge where we could see the torch being passed from gondola to gondola. The athletes would row beautifully on the gondolas, making it a visually stunning experience.
While we were waiting, I took a photo with one of the athletes. I have to admit, I'm not sure who this person is, but it was a real treat.
Maybe it was a trainer or someone else, but it was definitely an emotional experience for me. The whole thing was massive and visually stunning.
We didn't expect my husband and me to be greeted by Venice with such a surprise. Then the action moved to the main square of Venice.
We lined up in rows, and someone with the Olympic flame was supposed to pass through us. We waited for a long time, about an hour, with music playing on stage and people dancing.
And then comes the moment of truth – the Olympic flame!
It's all so real. I've never actually attended an event like this before. It's an experience I'll never forget, and one that's left a lasting impression on me.
