My go-to tabletop game that's always ready for a quick online session at a moment's notice
Hello there! I've been aware of Uno for years, but I just discovered the mobile app where you can play online with live players anytime. I was thrilled to dive into the world of Uno on my mobile device, and I'm glad I did.
Downloading the app was a piece of cake on the play store. No issues whatsoever during the download and installation process. I was up and running in no time, ready to take on the Uno community.
The goal of the game is pretty straightforward: be the first to get rid of all your cards. Or have fewer points than your opponents at the end of the round. For instance, you've got cards worth 2 and 3 (totaling 5), while your opponent has cards worth 9 and 1 (totaling 10), so you win.
Gameplay in the app is pretty simple: we play in teams of four, taking turns in a circle. You can play either a card of the same color as the one on top, or the same number. There are also 'wild cards' – cards that let you change the color or add 4 cards to the game. If you don't have a playable card, you can play a +4 card and choose any color. The next player has to either take 4 extra cards or challenge you if they think you have the right color. If they're right, you get to keep the +4 cards, but if they're wrong, they have to take 6 cards instead.
There are cards that let you change direction, +2, pass your turn, and the rules are easy to pick up, even for kids. I was stoked to see that the developers added game modes beyond the classic one. Plus, you can combine cards to get a +2 or +4 bonus. When you win or lose, you earn or lose coins. There are tons of betting levels, where your wins or losses are multiplied by 2, 4, 20, and so on.
I was hooked from the get-go, and I've been playing daily without getting bored. One of the best things is that matches don't take more than three minutes, so you can play without having to dedicate a ton of time. There are also in-game events that pop up regularly, where you can earn extra coins and crystals. It adds a nice layer of variety, although it did take some getting used to at first.
There are always players online. It's got that thrilling feel. You can play solo or with a partner. I like the extra features that add to the game, like special effects, avatars, and mini-games. Plus, there are enough players to start a game quickly. However, the game relies more on luck than strategy or skill.
The main issue for me is the sheer amount of ads. On one hand, you can watch a video to earn extra rewards and continue playing. On the other hand, ads pop up between matches, and I just end up closing the app and reopening it to avoid watching them. Some ads are super long, and you're stuck watching for a minute or so. To make matters worse, some ads repeat, so it gets old fast.
You can buy ad-free, and then ads only pop up when you want to watch a video to get rewards. I'm not sure if it's just me, but there's a weird sense of predictability to the losing streaks. It usually goes like this: you win a bunch, earn a bunch of coins, get lucky with cards, and then suddenly everything goes south, and you're stuck watching ads to continue playing.
I've had some frustrating moments when I've pressed the opponent's avatar by mistake, like when I tried to catch them out for not saying 'Uno' when they played their second-to-last card, but I ended up wasting my rare crystals instead. This has happened to me a few times.
I'd definitely recommend this game to fans of board games, and really anyone who enjoys playing games. The rules are easy to pick up, even for kids. Overall, it's a solid game that's worth checking out.
