I recently tested a universal potting mix for growing seedlings, and I wanted to share my honest thoughts on it. My parents live in a village, and I'm in charge of buying seeds for vegetable crops and growing seedlings. For growing my own seedlings, I use regular soil from our garden. Last year, in the spring, I decided to try a commercial potting mix because the manufacturer promised a lot of beneficial substances for plants. That's what caught my attention, and I decided to test it myself.
The problem was that buying this potting mix became a real challenge due to the Ukraine situation. At the time, the price was 750 hryvnia.
The bag itself weighs 50 kg.

We ended up buying a large quantity because we also wanted to add it to the greenhouse. The soil in the greenhouse gets depleted very quickly, so we decided to add some nutrients to give it a boost.
For growing my seedlings in pots, I mixed half of the regular garden soil with half of this commercial potting mix. I mixed it well and then planted the seedlings in the pots. I use this potting mix for growing high-end seedlings, like expensive pepper or cucumber varieties.
During the growing process, I didn't notice any significant improvements. My seedlings didn't grow excessively due to the beneficial substances. However, the potting mix didn't dry out quickly after watering, but when it did, it behaved like sawdust. Water wouldn't absorb well, and it would just run off the pot and onto the windowsill. I'd have to clean the windowsill as well.
This potting mix didn't impress me, and I wouldn't recommend it. To be honest, I was expecting a lot more from a commercial product.
For growing cabbage, sweet peppers, and tomatoes, we sow seeds directly in the greenhouse because we need a large quantity of seedlings. When sowing seeds in the greenhouse, we also added this commercial potting mix on top. We did this a few times, so we ended up with a decent layer of the potting mix on the bed. Unfortunately, the greenhouse was infested with these pesky earthworms, which loved the moist soil and ended up harming the seedlings' root systems. As a result, a significant portion of our seedlings died.
After analyzing the situation, we concluded that this potting mix is only suitable for indoor plants. Since then, we've stopped using it for seedlings and only use it for indoor flowers. The flowers aren't particularly thrilled about it, but we're using it to avoid wasting money.
I'm not impressed, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
