A Bittersweet Gem: Ulyanovsk's Railway Square

summarizeEditor's Summary

Located in the heart of Ulyanovsk's Railroad district, the old train station area is a must-visit destination for history buffs and families looking to explore a lesser-known side of the city. With its rich history dating back to 1952, this former train station turned historical monument boasts an impressive architectural design, a plethora of interesting exhibits, and a unique charm that's hard to find elsewhere. While it may not be the most popular spot in the city, the old train station is definitely worth a visit, especially with its convenient parking lot nearby. However, be aware that public transportation isn't super frequent, so plan ahead. We visited the old train station area with our daughter, and it was a great experience for the whole family.

We visited the old train station area, which is located in the Railroad district of Ulyanovsk. To be honest, it's a bit of a hidden gem and not exactly the most popular spot in the city. The public transportation isn't super frequent either. The last time we were here was when we took our daughter to the Kastanovaya Alleya park.
There's a large parking lot for cars nearby.
The old train station building, which dates back to 1952, is a historical monument and a significant cultural landmark in the region.
Here's the exact address:
40, Zhelyaznodorozhny Street, Ulyanovsk
According to the decision of the Ulyanovsk City Council dated November 3, 1977, the name of the square was officially abolished, and the train station was renamed to its current address.
The train station stopped operating in its original capacity in 1970, when the Ulyanovsk-Central station was opened.
We visited the old train station on December 5, 1954, when a monument to Vladimir Ulyanov, also known as Lenin in his youth, was unveiled.
Leningrad in his youth.
There's a nice park area with big pines, benches for relaxation, and proper lighting. It's clean and well-maintained.
During the Great Patriotic War, our city became one of the main evacuation centers for people, enterprises, institutions, and organizations. Trains with wounded soldiers arrived here, and our locals left from here to fight on the front lines. After the victory in 1945, the city welcomed its heroes back at this very spot.
I was blown away by the news that Ulyanovsk was awarded the honorary title 'City of Labor Valor' in 2020 - it's a huge source of pride and honor.
The building itself is two-story, with the first floor being incredibly high. The windows have been replaced with plastic ones after the renovation.
You can still spot some of the original wooden windows in certain areas.
The main entrance of the central building is impressive, with two one-story wings on either side.
Not only is the complex impressive in scale, but the dimensions are pretty mind-blowing too - it's over 122 meters long, with the central section being 23.5 meters wide and the side wings at 18.75 meters.
There's a memorial plaque near the entrance dedicated to the railway workers.
The central tower has a distinctive spire with a star-shaped finial that's visible from a distance.
The architecture is really interesting, with plenty of unique details to take in - it's a shame not everything has survived the years, but it's still a great sight to behold.
On June 21, 2018, members of the 'Night Wolves' motorcycle club unveiled a commemorative plaque 'Road of the Great Victory' in the arches of the old station.
You really need to take a closer look at the locomotive.
It's mind-boggling to think that every third soldier's uniform was made right here in the Ulyanovsk region.
The Ulyanovsk cartridge plant, named after Vladimir Volodarsky, produced over 5 billion cartridges during the war.
The overall view of the exhibit is pretty impressive.
I think the soldier statue is with his daughter. It looks like they're a family.
There are some clocks nearby.
The continuation is on the other side of the building.
It's a closer view.
This is the overall view.
There's a bench with a guitar nearby.
The suitcases are stacked on the ground.
There's a part of the rail as a reminder of the railway.
The lamp is broken.
There are five information stands near the building, each with a major event from WWII.
Some of them are starting to rust.
I highly recommend checking out the Railway Square (Old Train Station) in Ulyanovsk. This place has its own rich history, and it's definitely worth a visit.
