Tver's Timeless Beauty: The Old Volga Bridge

summarizeEditor's Summary

I've crossed the Volga River in Tver on both the old and new bridges, and every time I've noticed the Old Volga Bridge. While it's not as functional as the new one, the old bridge has its own charm - it's a historic spot that never fails to catch my eye. The curved arches and masts remind me of medieval towers, and it's a design that's not unlike the Freedom Bridge in Budapest. I'm glad I got to experience it for myself, and I think you will be too.

View from the New Bridge to the Old one on a sunny day. The cinema 'Zvezda' is on the left I've crossed the Volga River in Tver on both the Old and New bridges, and every time I've noticed the Old Volga Bridge, also known as the Old Bridge or simply the Old Bridge. The New one has more lanes and a better position for incoming traffic, but the Old one has its own charm - it's a historic spot that never fails to catch my eye.
The bridge is 215.5 meters long, with curved arches and masts that remind me of medieval towers. It's a design that's not unlike the Freedom Bridge in Budapest. The Old Bridge was the first permanent crossing in Tver, built back in 1900. It suffered significant damage during the war, but restoration work began before the war ended. Until the New Bridge opened in 1956, the Old one had a tram line, which was later moved to the New Bridge. Trams were eventually replaced by trolleybuses, which ran until the city's electric transport system was shut down in 2020.
Looking back, I think the Old Bridge has a perfect spot for taking photos, both during the day and at night. The bridge looks great against the backdrop of Tver's landmarks, and it's even more impressive when lit up at night, with the city's lights reflecting off the water.

View from the New Bridge to the Old one in the evening. The most beautiful lighting effect: the unlit bridge is gradually illuminated from all sides, like a red tapestry
Two bridges No wonder the Old Bridge is the face of the city and a cultural heritage site of regional significance. It's a must-see for anyone visiting Tver, and a great spot to capture some amazing photos. I've seen plenty of people stopping to take pictures and admire the bridge's beauty.
