I recently returned from an amazing trip to the Krasnodar region in southern Russia, where the sun was shining bright in the autumn of 2024. We decided to base ourselves in a quaint little settlement called Agoy, but we often ventured out to nearby towns and cities. One day, we decided to visit the charming town of Tuapse.
Your typical tourist shot - no surprises hereTuapse is a small but picturesque town on the Black Sea coast of Russia that's got a lot to offer tourists, from its stunning landscapes to its rich history. But, like any place, it's got its pros and cons.
The train tracks and trains that take you from one place to anotherI'll get into all the details eventually.
I know some kids have been to a lot of tourist spots in Russia, but I was one of the lucky ones who hadn't - until now. The Black Sea is my third beach experience in 27 years, and I've been to Eysk, Yalta, and finally, the Krasnodar region this year.
Tuapse waterfront photoSo, that's my whole experience with it.
I'm not sure if I'd repeat the trip anytime soon. The southern vibe just didn't click with me, and the weather was way worse than I expected – the heat was pretty tough for a wimp like me too.
I'd much rather head to Kazan, Kaliningrad, the Altai mountains, or my favorite – St. Petersburg. But for now, back to the summer trip and that one day in Tuapse.
It's a short stay, so I won't be making any judgments, but I'll describe it for anyone planning a trip.
The palm alley – the smell is amazing!Things to consider when planning your trip to Tuapse.
5 reasons why Tuapse isn't my top choice for a beach vacation:
Lack of sandy beaches.I was expecting more sandy beaches in Tuapse, but what I got was a bunch of pebble beaches. If you're a fan of sandy shores, this might be a bit of a bummer. But hey, you can always bring some comfy flip flops and be ready for a pebble-filled adventure!
It's super loud.Tuapse is a port city, and the constant sound of ships, trucks, and trains can really put a damper on your relaxing vacation. It's especially bad during peak season when there are loads of tourists around. It's like a never-ending stream of noise, horns, and activity. I'm not sure about the electric scooters, but I did spot a few, and they would've added to the chaos.
That's basically the main reason we didn't choose Tuapse for our beach vacation.
The drive was actually fantastic! But I had to be careful at night and in the evenings, as there's a lot of attention.Messy beaches.I'm not a fan of this kind of thing because, apart from the dirt from cars and machinery, people just love to throw trash out the window – gum, wrappers, tissues, or banana peels. I wouldn't want to swim in that, and I certainly wouldn't let my kid.

Infrastructure issues. Some areas of the city can feel a bit neglected, and the service at local beaches and restaurants leaves a lot to be desired. It can really put a damper on your overall impression of the trip. But, I guess when you're heading to the 'Russian south', you're kind of expecting the worst.
Isolation from other resorts.Tuapse is a bit off the beaten path from more popular resorts like Sochi or Adler, which can make traveling and finding things to do a bit of a challenge.

Nature and Landscapes.I've fallen in love with Tuapse's stunning mountain scenery and lush green forests. The unique natural landscapes, like waterfalls and nature reserves, offer endless opportunities for an active holiday or simply enjoying the great outdoors. I can see why artists come here to recharge and tap into their creative energy. The views? Absolutely breathtaking! I highly recommend checking out the Kiselev Museum – it's a charming little cottage perched on the top of the city, offering a stunning view of the city and the sea.

I loved being in the water, but by late September, we weren't in it for as long as we would've liked. Maybe the storms that rolled in had something to do with it, or maybe it was just the time of year. Either way, the Ague Sea is cleaner and just as warm, and it's a bonus that there are no roads alongside it.
A day out by the seaLoads to do.And don't forget the local tour operators – you can find activities ranging from half-day excursions to multi-day trips.
There are heaps of ways to get active in Tuapse, from hiking in the hills to bike rides and water sports. It's a top pick for those who love action-packed travel.
In the end, Tuapse has its own unique charm and character.
When I visited Tuapse, I was struck by how different it is from other tourist destinations. I know some people love it here because of the clean streets and plenty of trash cans, but for me, the "grittiness" of the town was a major draw. The streets are wide, but they're not always spotless.
The town itself isn't exactly a model of cleanliness, but I get it – some people come here because of the kid-friendly attractions like the dolphin show and water park. There's definitely something for everyone in Tuapse, whether you're traveling with kids or just looking for a relaxing getaway.
I have to say, Lenin's statue is the only real attraction in this town. The rest of the path is a bit of a loop that you only realize once you get to the statue. We managed to explore the city, walk along the waterfront, try out some delicious food at different places, visit the Kiselev Museum, walk along the Alley of Fame, and even stop by the ethnographic museum.dolmensPeople here are more numerous than in Agoe. They're more rushed, more chaotic, but they love to offer you something (and why not, it's tourist season after all).
the Alley of Military GlorySo, if you're looking for more peace and quiet, a warm clean sea, I'd recommend Agoe (which is right next door). And from there, you can get to Tuapse on a marshrutka or taxi in about 15-20 minutes. That's my two cents for now
Leaving Tuapse behind.
