We booked the Travelodge Phuket Town for a three-night stay at the beginning of our trip. It's about an hour's drive from the airport and situated right in the middle of Phuket Town, but don't expect to have the beach right outside your door - you'll need to hop in a taxi to get there. We picked this place with specific goals in mind: save some cash on our first day after arrival, visit the Phuket Center shopping mall, which is literally just a stone's throw away, hit the water park, and head to Patong Beach. Since we just needed a place to crash for the night, a fancy hotel wasn't a priority. In the end, we saved around $2,000 compared to a five-star hotel.
Check-in was a breeze, and we didn't have to leave a deposit. We were escorted to the elevator, which only works with your room card, and then we were on our own to find our room. The elevator situation is a bit weird, as there's a staircase right next to it that anyone can use to get into the hotel.
The room was small but cozy, with everything we needed. The hotel's still relatively new, and the furniture and decor are in great shape. The bed was a comfortable medium-firm, and the pillows were nice. The linens were clean, and there was a TV, a desk along the wall, a kettle with cups, a fridge, a safe, and a conditioner. Each day, they restocked the water, tea, and coffee. The bathroom had the standard toiletries: shampoo, body wash, and liquid soap.
The biggest minus for me was that the windows don't open, and there's no balcony. So, you're stuck with either opening the door or using the conditioner for some fresh air. That really took away from the experience. Another minus was that the shower cubicle isn't fully enclosed, so water leaks onto the floor.
The staff was friendly and helpful, no issues there.
The hotel serves breakfast, which is served on the first floor near the reception. It's not a huge spread, but you won't go hungry - there are veggies, fruits, pastries, eggs, coffee, juices, and so on. They have both indoor and outdoor seating areas. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the breakfast for just 3,000 baht a day.
The pool is small but nice, and the water's a bit chilly. There are lounge chairs, so you can soak up some sun or just chill out in the evening. There's also a gym nearby, but it closes at 10 PM.
The hotel's location is pretty good: it's off the main road, but there are cafes, a pharmacy, and a 7-Eleven nearby. The Phuket Center shopping mall is literally right next door, which is why we chose this hotel. It's a 10-minute taxi ride to the Andamanda water park, which is small but fun, with weak waves and a 'lazy river' that I really enjoyed. To get to the beaches, you'll need to take a taxi, which is what we did for Patong Beach.
We used the Travelodge Phuket Town for a week, and the build quality really impressed me. The buttons feel solid, and the battery lasts longer than I expected. Considering the location and amenities, we got a pretty good value for money. If you're looking for a full-on beach vacation, I wouldn't recommend this place - you'll want a hotel with a private beach, a pool, and windows that open. But if you're on a budget and want to explore the island, the Travelodge Phuket Town is a good option.
