I recently spent some time in Bashkortostan for my field geographical practice, and I'm super excited to share my experience with you.
We visited some amazing places, including the Shulgan-Tash cave, which I wrote about here, and the Toratau shikhans, which I'll tell you about today.
Getting to Toratau
The shikhans are located in the Iшимбайский район of Bashkortostan, about 20 kilometers from Sterlitamak. It's a pretty remote area, so don't expect to find many public transportation options.

Unfortunately, getting there by bus involves a change of buses and is a long, uncomfortable ride. If you don't have your own car, it's really hard to get to the shikhans. We took a hired bus, which then brought us back after 3 hours. That was just enough time for us to take a look around and buy some souvenirs.
What are shikhans?
A shikhans is a single mountain that's the remains of a Paleozoic-era reef that was once on the bottom of the Ural Sea. It's made up of sedimentary rocks, mainly limestone. There are four of them in Bashkortostan, but one has already been destroyed - it's been mined to the point where it's just a quarry for extracting limestone, which is used to make soda ash. The other shikhans are also under threat - the soda company has already started working on them. I'm not sure if the fact that this area is now a geopark will stop them from developing Toratau, but it's possible.
Only Toratau is set up for visitors, so we headed there. The other shikhans are also possible to visit, but they're even harder to get to.
Geo Park
The Toratau Geo Park is pretty well-equipped for visitors of all ages. You can bring your grandkids or your grandparents – they've got a nice trail and a staircase. Let's start from the beginning.
The entrance to the park is free, which is a great perk. Before you enter the park, it's a good idea to visit the 'facility' because there aren't any other toilets in the park.
Right by the entrance, there are some little shops – food, souvenirs, the works. You can grab a coffee or have a full meal. Here, you can pick up a map of the geo park.
We took the big circular trail, which was about 2 km long. Whichever trail you choose, you'll definitely pass by the staircase up the hill.
The path is pretty nice – it's wide, and I saw moms with strollers. On both sides of the path, there are information stands with all sorts of interesting stuff.
We passed by the remains of an abandoned campsite, but we decided not to go in. It gave me the heebie-jeebies, to be honest.
The scenery was dotted with all sorts of wildflowers, and the smell was just incredible.
Summit Hike
Right next to the stairs, there's a sign for horse-drawn taxis - that's a first for me, and it's pretty funny.
On the other hand, it's super convenient for people who are too exhausted to make it back down to their car. I'm guessing the horses aren't strong enough to carry someone up the hill, so I think it's only for the flat part.
The stairs are long, but they're actually really comfortable. You can, of course, just take the shortcut up the trail, but it's way safer to take the stairs.
There are even designated rest areas with some shade.
Reaching the top of Toratau was a real treat. The views of the Ural Mountains' foothills were simply breathtaking.
The nearby shihans offered equally stunning vistas.
And on the horizon, I could see the city of Sterlitamak.
One thing to note is that the terrain is mostly rocky and treeless. Make sure to pack a hat and water when you're climbing the shihans on a hot summer day.
The views were certainly beautiful, but I've seen even more spectacular ones in my time.
What really caught my attention, though, were the fossils. Like these ancient corals.
Or the impressions of brachiopod shells.
With a closer look, you can even spot the 'ribs' - that's just the impression of ancient sea creatures.
I came back for this ancient 'fishing spot' and it's worth the trip. But, let's be real, it's not cool to take the fossils with you – I'm guilty of it myself, though. I needed them for my thesis, after all.
I spent about 30 minutes at the top, took some photos, and soaked in the view.
My Takeaways
I really enjoyed my time at Shihan. It's a great spot to slow down, watch the birds fly by, and gaze out at the Ural Mountains in the distance. I think the best times to visit are at sunrise or sunset – it gets way too hot during the day.
It was cool to explore the ancient sea floor and climb to the top of the hill. And finding fossils? That's just the best. Kids would love searching for the fish fossils, too.
The only downside is the transportation. If you don't have a car, it's a real pain to get here.
I highly recommend checking this place out.
