Tinkoff Bank

I've been using Tinkoff Bank for a while now, and I gotta say, they've got some solid financial services. You can bank online or on your phone - it's super easy and secure. They've got all the usual stuff like online banking, mobile banking, and more.

Tinkoff's Convenient Setup Turns into a Nightmare: Ignoring Privacy, Aggressive Debt Collection, and Unhelpful Support

summarizeEditor's Summary

I was initially drawn to Tinkoff's cashback rewards and easy application process, but my experience quickly turned sour. The convenient setup was a ruse, hiding a company that ignores customer privacy, uses aggressive debt collection methods, and provides unhelpful support. I'm sharing my story to warn others about the potential pitfalls of banking with Tinkoff. From ignoring my requests for a credit card to delivering a debit card to my car with little regard for the contract, I've seen a disturbing lack of professionalism from this bank. If you're considering opening a Tinkoff account, think twice – the convenience may not be worth the headaches. The bank's website and mobile app are user-friendly and easy to navigate, but that's where the good stuff ends. I tried to get a credit card, but the application process was a nightmare. The support team was unhelpful, and the bank's debt collection methods were aggressive and intimidating. I've also struggled to opt-out of unwanted services, and the bank's lack of transparency makes it difficult to understand their terms and conditions.

Tinkoff's Convenient Setup Turns into a Nightmare: Ignoring Privacy, Aggressive Debt Collection, and Unhelpful Support
A few years ago, there was a buzz around Tinkoff cards - everywhere I heard about the attractive cashback and simple application process. Despite the fact that Sberbank was fine with me at the time, I decided to order a card from this bank. The idea of applying for loans through their program at work was an additional motivation, but fortunately, my hands didn't reach for it. Instead, I applied for a credit card with a limit of 85,000.
Application
Initially, I ordered a debit card. Credit card thoughts didn't cross my mind. The card was delivered to my car by a bank employee, which already speaks to the level of their love for clients. On the one hand, this seems convenient for both the bank and the client, but on the other hand, it shows the bank's non-serious attitude towards concluding contracts.
I'll skip the moment when the bank manager couldn't find my address and pulled up to the neighboring house. I'll also skip the moment when I rushed to her car and met her with a sour expression. At that moment, all this seemed insignificant to me, as a big cashback was ahead. I was photographed with my passport, gave a few signatures, handed over a package with the card, and they left to serve another client.Months later, I applied for an online Tinkoff credit card.
Card in action
I didn't see any super cashback. There's no need to go into details about that. The cashback categories and their percentages left me wanting more. Some categories are even promotional.
Tinkoff (TBANK) violates the lawWorking with overdue debt
But here, Tinkoff really shines. At the end of November, I encountered serious financial difficulties, about which I had previously decided to inform the support team to find a solution. However, the bank was not ready to compromise and responded with a long, template message, the gist of which is simple: pay up. I've got a pretty sketchy credit history, thanks to all those pesky microfinance company calls, so I wasn't too fussed about it. I thought my debt repayment was protected under Federal Law 230, but it seems Tinkoff Bank had other plans. On December 14th, they rang my entire contact list and spilled the beans about my outstanding debt and overdue payment.
At first, my sister texted me saying I owed the bank 85,000 rubles, and then my brother chimed in that I was supposed to pay 10,000. They'd somehow managed to sort it out with my brother, but still sent me a message:
I immediately went to the chat to get to the bottom of it. Yeah, I hadn't sent them consent to interact with third parties, but they shouldn't have been sharing my debt info with others anyway, according to Federal Law 230. They get my phone numbers from our own bank transfers and app permissions, by the way. These actions are a clear breach of Article 13 of Federal Law 152-FZ 'On Personal Data', which prohibits sharing personal info (like debt details) with third parties without consent. It's also a potential KоАП РФ Article 14.8 offense, which deals with consumer rights in financial services. But Tinkoff Bank seems to be interpreting the law their own way:
After a long back-and-forth where I explained their mistake and they sent me pre-written responses, I decided it was pointless to keep arguing and lodged a complaint with the Federal Service for State Registration, Cadastre, and Cartography (Rosreestr). Meanwhile, Tinkoff Bank kept sending me reminders about the debt, saying they'd reached an agreement with my brother to pay it off – but somehow, they still expected me to cough up the cash.
I put my bank account on ice, closed my debit card and investments, but they went and blocked all their services, including my credit card. I found out when I tried to top it up from another bank.
I went to TBank's support to get some clarification.
Emotions took over at this point, and it shows in my conversation with their staff. Let's get this straight - the pressure wasn't just on me, but also on my loved ones, making the situation even more intense.
It was impossible to top it up myself, so I had to use the dodgy but often-used TBank method - calling the operator over the phone.
The bottom line
After sharing my experience with friends, I was shocked to hear that they'd had similar issues with TBank - 'This is the worst bank ever,' many of them told me.
Now, I'm planning to settle my debt, get a statement about its absence and the closed contract. And forget about it like a bad dream.
I have a personal example where a microfinance organization showed themselves to be more decent than this so-called bank when it came to late payments. I recommend checking it out if you found this review interesting.
A bank that's willing to issue a card anywhere, but at the same time systemically violates your basic right to privacy and puts pressure on your loved ones, doesn't deserve your trust. I strongly advise against Tinkoff for anyone who values their reputation, family peace, and the law.
