Hello there!
I've been slacking off on writing movie reviews lately, but I've got a soft spot for 'em. Lately, I've been watching a bunch of films that are just meh – not terrible, not great, just... there. And that's even worse than when the plot is just weird or the story doesn't grab me. At least then I feel something.
But what's the fun in writing about a movie that's just... fine? I mean, I guess I'm a bit lazy when it comes to inspiration. I don't know how long I'd have to wait for a decent film to come along if I didn't stumble upon one every now and then. And that's exactly what happened – I found a good one, it was enjoyable, and I wanted to share that with you.
Movie DetailsMovie Title: 'The Uninvited'
Genre: horror, fantasy
Release Year: 2008
Country: USA
Directors: Charlie Gard, Thomas Gard
Runtime: 1 hour 27 minutes
Kinopoisk Rating: 6.9 out of 10
Description:
After her mother's death, Anna checks into a mental hospital for treatment. Upon her release, she heads back home, only to find out that her father's seeing Rachel, a nurse who took care of her ailing mother. Anna's confusion turns to horror when her deceased mother's ghost appears, warning her about Rachel's sinister intentions. Alongside her sister, Anna starts investigating the strange circumstances surrounding her mother's demise.
Storyline*Note that everything mentioned below is also in the official movie description and trailer.*
I still can't shake off the feeling that something's off after Anna's mom died in a fire. She ended up in a psychiatric hospital for months, and when she came back home, it was like a whole new world.
Her dad, sister, and Rachel were all there to welcome her back, but things didn't feel right. Rachel was a familiar face - she used to be the nurse who took care of Anna's mom when she was sick, but now she's the new woman in her dad's life. The stepmom.Anna starts to get suspicious about how everything fell into place. Was it just a coincidence that Rachel showed up and Anna's mom died soon after? I mean, the official story is that it was an accident, but the fire seems too convenient. What really gets to Anna is that she can't remember that fateful night. The details come back to her in fragments, and she starts to see ghosts warning her about the danger. It's like her mind is trying to tell her something, but she can't quite put the pieces together.CharactersThe main character, Anna (Emily Browning), is definitely not your typical outgoing type. She's more of a laid-back person, and that's what makes her so relatable.
Emily Browning I've got to hand it to this actress - when she wants something, she goes after it with determination. Honestly, the character's style is nothing special, but Emily Browning looks a bit cardboard-y at times, but it's not enough to get on my nerves. Emily Browning I was totally transported back to the early 2000s when I saw her hair - those trends from back in the day are pretty cringeworthy now. Oh well. Sister to the main character, Ariel Kebbel, is way more emotional in a good way.
Ariel Kebbel Sometimes she's sassy and sarcastic, but overall, she's great. I just noticed that Ariel Kebbel does a really good job playing tough girls - I'm actually interested in checking out her filmography and seeing if she's done any more serious roles. David Strathairn as the girls' dad - I'm not even sure if his name was mentioned.
David Strathairn He's basically your typical fairy tale 'good dad' who's oblivious to the drama unfolding around him. Meanwhile, he's busy admiring his shoes. And of course, Elizabeth Mitchell - the ex-nurse and future stepmom.
Rachel (Elizabeth Mitchell) Rachel's got a certain charm to her, but there's always something lurking beneath the surface, and her smiles can be downright chilling. My ImpressionsGenre-wise, this movie's more of a thriller than a horror flick, despite what the label says. Sure, there are some scary moments, but the overall vibe's more about mystery and suspense than outright terror.
To be honest, I was expecting a straight-up horror movie, but this one ended up surprising me. It's a wild ride, and I was hooked from start to finish. One thing that really stood out to me was the atmosphere in this movie. It's got a certain... je ne sais quoi. On the one hand, there's a dark, foreboding quality that builds as the story unfolds. On the other hand, there's a sense of warmth and summer vibes that makes you feel like you're in for a fun, lighthearted ride. The score's another highlight. The music's beautiful, and it perfectly complements the action on screen, evoking the right emotions at just the right time.
But the real star of the show's the plot. This movie's got a way of drawing you in from the very start. There's no lag or jarring plot twists - it's a smooth, well-paced ride that keeps you guessing until the very end.
What really gets me is how a film with such a short runtime can end up feeling so balanced and complete.I was blown away by how the story unfolds, with even the most out-there moments eventually making sense. There's no frustrating cliffhanger or a bunch of unanswered questions. The story ties up neatly, with no loose ends in sight.
I'm sure there are some flaws, but I didn't notice any gaping plot holes that made me go 'where did that come from?' I wouldn't say 'The Uninvited' is a genius film that blew me away, but it's definitely a solid effort that kept me guessing until the end. I had a few different theories about how it would all wrap up, so there was still some suspense.
As a result, I really enjoyed how the film handled its ending, tying everything together in a way that felt logical and satisfying. Overall, I liked everything about the movie. So, to wrap it up - this film is a great choice for fans of the genre, and I'd definitely recommend checking it out!
