The Changeling

This movie's got a seriously creepy vibe going on - it's about a young boy who discovers a mysterious presence in his home, and let me tell you, it's a wild ride from start to finish. The tension builds slowly, but when it hits, it's intense.

My Disappointing Experience with 'The Switch' - A Supernatural Series That Missed the Mark

summarizeEditor's Summary

I was really hyped for 'The Switch', a supernatural series on Netflix that explores the past and present through a unique blend of horror, fantasy, and thriller elements. The show's premise had me hooked, but unfortunately, it didn't quite live up to my expectations. The story jumps back and forth between the past and present, which can be super confusing at times. I was expecting a more engaging and well-executed show, but the plot twists and character developments fell flat. The first season has only three episodes, which is a real letdown considering it's supposed to have eight. I was hoping for a more meaningful exploration of the show's themes, but they felt shallow and surface-level. Overall, I'd say 'The Switch' is a disappointing series that failed to deliver on its promising premise.

Hello!
I recently checked out the Netflix series 'The Switch', directed by Jonathan van Tulleken, which premiered on September 8th. At first, the synopsis had me hooked, but the actual show was a letdown. It's a niche series that didn't quite resonate with me.
2023, horror, fantasy, thriller, 1 season
USA
The first season is supposed to have 8 episodes, but so far, only 3 have been released, which is a bit of a letdown.
What's the series about?
The show explores the past and present - how Apollo's parents met, and now Apollo's in the present, meeting his wife. It's a pretty standard setup, but the execution falls short. The story jumps back and forth between the past and present, which can be confusing at times.
Apollo's been trying to get a date with Emily (Clark Backo) for ages, but after six rejections, she finally agreed. They had a great time, and in the future, they got married. Emily gave birth to a boy named Brian. But then she fell into postpartum depression and started thinking her son wasn't hers. It's a pretty dark and twisted plot, but it didn't quite hook me.
Cast
Although the series didn't really grab me, the actors are great and did a fantastic job. Lakith Stanfield shines as Apollo, bringing a lot of depth to the character. The rest of the cast is also impressive, but they're not enough to save the show.
Apollo (Lakith Stanfield) Potential guy, husband, father. He sells old books and dreams of saving up for a new home and being a good loving dad. He's got a lot of potential, but the show doesn't quite live up to it.
Emily (Clark Backo)
Used to be a sweet, active girl. Now she's a mom with huge problems. She's got a lot of depth, but the show doesn't quite explore it. Clark Backo does a great job of bringing Emily's character to life, but it's not enough to save the show.
]]>]]>Lilian (Addison Porter)
I've got to say, she nailed the role of Apollo's mom. Addison Porter has a great track record, having appeared in 'Thousand', 'AIU', 'The Vampire Diaries', 'House M.D.', and 'Grey's Anatomy', to name a few.
My take on the show
I'm not gonna sugarcoat it – everyone's got their own opinions. As a fan of mystery shows, I appreciate it when there's substance behind the story, rather than just wasting time on six pointless episodes only to have a weird twist at the end. 'The Switch' from the same series is a perfect example. I just couldn't get into it. I managed to slog through three episodes, waiting for some real drama, but all I got was darkness, apathy, and a general sense of unease. Interestingly, that's exactly what the creators were going for – a bleak and uncomfortable atmosphere.
The series is an adaptation of Victor LaValle's scandalous novel, which masterfully combines fantasy and horror elements.
The creators took a risk by not focusing on a detailed adaptation of the story, but instead trying to visually recreate the novel's eerie and unsettling atmosphere.
The first episode is an intro, setting the stage for the characters' past. When Emma was abroad, she connected with an enigmatic woman who tied a red scarf to her wrist, granting her three wishes. That's one of the more intriguing moments. Two of the wishes are revealed, but the third remains a mystery for now.
]]>The second episode is slightly more engaging (two out of five, I'd say). Emma starts losing her grip on reality, seeing strange things, and suspects that the child might not be hers. I genuinely feel bad for the girl, who goes from being a happy, carefree beauty to a worried, frazzled mess.
Honestly, I've been watching this show, and it's like watching a train wreck – you don't want to look, but you can't help yourself. The beginning of the third series was the final nail in the coffin for me. I won't be continuing to watch. From this point on, things start to get really dark and twisted, and I'm still trying to piece together what's going on.
The mystery is there, but it's really distant. So far, it's only related to Apollo's past and memories. Maybe when all the episodes are out, I'll watch the finale to see how it all ends, but for now, the show just isn't holding my interest.
I'm not familiar with the original work, and honestly, I'm not interested. This show is really unique, and it's not for everyone. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
P.S. I'm not saying the show is bad – it's just not for me! I'm sure it'll find its audience, though.
