Synopsis
This was my first foray into the works of American author Jack London.
What really drew me in was the concept of the hero being a time machine, traveling through different eras. How cool is that?
BRIEFLY : a professor of agronomy is sentenced to death. During his imprisonment, he discovers a way to leave his body and travel through time.
After reading the blurb, I had some burning questions:
Where does the hero of the story travel to? What crime landed him in prison? Will he manage to escape?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Darrel Stening is serving his sentence for murdering his colleague. The professor keeps the reason for the crime a secret until the very end, keeping me intrigued… and only when it's time to wrap up the story, he reveals the motive behind the crime.
In prison, Darrel faces a problem with the authorities, and he's kept in solitary confinement as a particularly dangerous inmate. To make matters worse, a fellow inmate starts a riot in the prison and tells the authorities about the dynamite he claims Darrel has hidden. But what a ridiculous accusation turns out to be, and the harsh consequences for the prisoner are severe. Darrel only mentions the traitor a couple of times, but in the end, he finds the strength and means to escape his cell and take revenge on the scoundrel.
I was surprised by how well Darrell connected with the other inmates in his category. He gave them a lot of attention, describing their characters and what made them such great minds. Over time, they all became friends, despite never having met in person. They communicated in their own invented language, played chess in their own way, and these were their main forms of entertainment, stuck in their cells for life.
The inmates had to endure so many punishments, being trapped in those places made Darrell a pretty tough guy. It's hard to understand, how can someone admit to something they didn't do? That's when Darrel discovers a way to travel through time and space. The stories he tells of his travels are mostly tragic, as he has what he calls the Crimson Fury, a curse that's been killing him since the beginning of his existence. It's a heartbreaking realization that his spirit can't be destroyed, and Darrell's journey ends in the end, but now he knows it's not the end.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was expecting something magical, mystical, and whimsical from the title of the book, Stranger in a Strange Land. I thought the story would follow Darrell as he regularly travels through the stars and galaxies, encountering alien civilizations. Unfortunately, that's not what happened. He only traveled through the stars once, as a baby with a stick in his hands.
One thing I liked about the writing style was that it was told in the first person, but sometimes Darrell would go on and on about his social status. The dark tone of the paragraphs made me think, oh no, not again, he's talking about himself. Darrell, we get it, we know where you are and what's happening to you! The tension builds up, making the story even more tragic, and deep down, I hoped that Darrell would get lucky and be released.
I read the book really quickly, it's engaging, especially after I found out how Darrell travels and where he goes.
The bonus is that the author provides new stories of Darrell's travels each time, but they're not happy stories, they're original and thought-provoking!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I think it's fair to say that this novel is more of a heartwarming blanket, because I was expecting a sci-fi adventure with Darrell traveling through space, not a poignant exploration of human existence!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This novel left me feeling melancholic, nostalgic, and yearning for more, rather than elated or uplifted. There aren't any plot twists that suddenly turn the protagonist's life around for the better. I appreciate that, because it's refreshing to see an author tackle the complexities of human existence without resorting to convenient plot devices.
At the end of the novel, the author delves into the fundamental questions of human existence, pondering the nature of life, humanity, and other profound topics. I was particularly moved by the way the author elevates and celebrates the feminine experience.
