A Taste of Thailand at The Pirathouse - Mini Chicken Skewers and Shrimp Are a Must-Try!
We'd already heard of The Pirathouse before our trip to Langkawi, thanks to rave reviews and its reputation as one of the few places on the island that serves beer and cocktails. Since it was right next to our hotel, The Royal Chenang, we decided to grab lunch there while waiting for our room to be ready.
Today's review is about the Caribbean Seafood Restaurant by The Pirathouse located right on Tengah Beach in Langkawi. It's hard to miss this place, thanks to the giant pirate ship outside. The restaurant is located on the southern part of the island.
Since we were there during the new year holidays, we were greeted by a Christmas tree as soon as we walked in. You can choose to sit either inside the main dining area or outside. We opted for the main dining area since it was scorching hot outside and the AC was a welcome relief.
We were the only ones in the restaurant at the time, so we got to choose any table we wanted. The tables are spaced far enough apart, so even if other guests arrive, you'll still have a comfortable spot to enjoy your meal.
There's no dedicated bathroom inside the restaurant. You'll find a handwashing station just outside the main dining area. The actual bathroom is located in a separate little hut, which might seem intimidating at first, but don't worry, it's not as scary as it looks.
I love that the menu comes with pictures, so you know exactly what you're ordering. Each menu foldout is divided by main ingredient. Whether it's shrimp, chicken, or beef. I was here specifically for the shrimp, so I made my choice right away.
My husband and son, on the other hand, took a while to decide on the chicken and beef dishes. By the way, they have soups here, so we decided to come back and have lunch again next time. There's also food that's suitable for those who don't want to try Asian cuisine. So, you can choose fries or spaghetti.
They have beer and cocktails. There's a big selection of freshly squeezed juices, or as they call them, "freshies." You can also choose Chinese tea as a drink. With Chang Beer (8 ringgit) we encountered it even in Thailand, so we took it by habit. It's a light beer that reminds me of all-inclusive beer, where you drink and don't get drunk.
My kid chose the Watermelon Fresh (8 ringgit) - said it's very tasty, minus the fact that the drink wasn't cold. For some reason, they give warm glasses and put a lot of ice in them, which immediately melts. I decided to choose a drink with an unusual name, Kasturi juice (8 ringgit). By taste, it reminded me of ginger root. A bit sour, a bit bitter. Maybe if it was very chilled, it would be more enjoyable to drink. I wouldn't repeat it, but it was worth trying once.
My kid took ages to decide what to order, but he finally settled on the Chiken Ham Carbonara for 38 ringgit. He said he wasn't ready to try any Asian dishes yet and wanted something more familiar. Portion-wise, it was a bit small, but he said it tasted great, wasn't too spicy, and reminded him of homemade spaghetti.
My husband said he wouldn't want to eat it in the heat, but would just drink instead. So, he opted for a snack to go with his beer - the Chiken Satay for 12 ringgit. I don't know how they manage to cook chicken in Asia to make it so tender, but we always enjoy it there. The grilled chicken on sticks, usually served with a spicy sauce and a handful of greens and veggies, is something we'd order again.
I had already picked out the prawns and their cooking method beforehand. The Assam Prawn for 42 ringgit really caught my eye. They're also known as tamarind prawns, where the combination of sweet and sour flavors is a winner. To make this dish, they use fresh prawns with their shells and heads intact, marinate them in tamarind pulp, salt, sugar, and dark soy sauce, then grill them at high heat.
The dishes arrived within 10 minutes, and we were surprised by how quickly they got our food. After the carbonara, my kid ordered a scoop of Ice Cream for 5 ringgit. The ice cream was tasty, but had ice chunks (which is also quite common in Asia).
Our total bill came out to be 177 ringgit (3540 rubles) with the 10% service charge included. On our next visit, a few days later when we were staying at a different hotel on Chiang Mai Beach, my husband and I decided to grab a snack, while my kid said he wasn't hungry and just wanted to drink some watermelon juice.
Arbuzny fressh for 8 ringgit and apelsiniy fressh for 8 ringgit. This time, the glasses were cold, and drinking the juice was more enjoyable. We decided to start with a garlic bread, the Garlic Bread - 18 rindgit toasted loaf with a crispy crust was a great choice.
My partner loved the chicken dish last time, so he opted for it again this time - the Sweet & Sour Chiken - 18 rindgit. The citrusy flavors in the sauce added a nice twist to the dish. The chicken was tender and juicy. We devoured it in no time.
I had seen the Seafood Tomyam Soup - 20 rindgit on the menu last time, so I made sure to order it again this time. They offer two sizes of bowls - S and L, so you can choose depending on how hungry you are. I opted for the S size, but they brought me a huge bowl with a generous serving of the soup. I had to ask if it was indeed the S size, and they assured me it was. I couldn't finish the whole bowl, but it was definitely a lot of food.
The soup had a lot of seafood and it was all of a decent size. The flavor was amazing, but it was definitely on the spicier side. I'd say this was the best Tom Yam soup I had during my trip.
Our meal came out to 120 rindgit (2400 rubles) including the 10% service charge. We were really impressed with the service. We didn't know that the cafe closed for a break from 2 pm to 4 pm, but the staff handled it smoothly. When new customers arrived, they were told about the break, and our server reassured us that we had plenty of time to finish our meal.
Even when our child asked for ice cream, they happily brought it out. We ended up leaving around 3 pm, and no one rushed us or asked us to leave. Each dish arrived promptly, and we loved the taste of every dish. They also have a selection of drinks, including alcohol, which is a nice touch.
I'd definitely recommend the Caribbean Seafood Restaurant by The Pirathouse because of the excellent service and food. We'll be back!
