"Scalpel. Suction. Catheter. Cut."
Hello there!
I'm still on the hunt for a great rom-com with a fantastic bromance. I've got just the thing for you: ↓
I recently finished watching 'The Phantom Doctor,' and I'm excited to share my thoughts on this medical drama.
About the show
This is a medical drama (a South Korean series) that follows the lives of two doctors:
one is a genius cardio-thoracic surgeon, performing complex operations on the heart and thoracic organs;the other is a young intern who seems to have zero interest in medicine.
Left to rightThe second guy, you might be surprised to learn, is actually very intelligent and knows his medical stuff inside out. But he's terrified of blood and gets the shakes just thinking about the operating room.It turns out the intern is the son of the hospital director, and let's just say he's got connections. He might not have the theory down pat, but he's still got a spot in the residency program.
But don't count him out just yet. With the help of the genius surgeon, he might just overcome his fears and start performing operations himself!
But there's a catch
Given the title, you might have guessed that one of our main characters is a ghost. And you'd be right – at least, for the first episode or two. Once he becomes a ghost, he can possess the body of... his intern!
That's some intense bromance right there. I've been searching for it for ages, and I'm so glad I found it.
Park Eun Bin tenderly strokes her own head in the body of Sung Tae KI'm absolutely smitten with this bromance. Both leads are incredibly charming guys.
One of the actors, Kim Sang Bom, is the younger brother in 'The Tale of Gumiho.' I've been a fan of his since I watched him play the role of the cunning but ultimately kind and vulnerable younger brother fox.
I started watching this show just because of him, and I'm so glad I did.
I've got to say, I was intrigued by the actor Rain's portrayal of the genius cardio-thoracic surgeon, Professor Cha Eun-bin. I hadn't seen him in anything before, but it wasn't necessary.
Just look at this guy!
First impressions of the show
Very interesting! That's what I thought when I started watching the drama 'The Ghost Doctor.' I've had it up to here with romance dramas, so this one was like a refreshing drink on a hot day.
Although the first few minutes were pretty dramatic, it didn't spoil the experience for me. There wasn't too much drama, and it felt fitting. Then, a lively bromance kicked in, with a healthy dose of humor.
The drama uses a lot of medical terminology, theories, and operations. It doesn't detract from the show; it makes it feel very realistic. At least, that's how I see it – I'm a total newbie when it comes to medical stuff.
The maestro of surgeryPlot
In the residency program, a new intern is assigned to work with the genius cardio-thoracic surgeon, Professor Cha Eun-bin. The intern, the director's son, and the grandson of the clinic's chairman, isn't exactly the surgeon's cup of tea.
A tragedy strikes: Professor Cha Eun-bin is involved in an accident, falls into a coma, and becomes a ghost. His patients are left without a surgeon, and they might die without him.
The ghost surgeon, Professor Cha Eun-binIt turns out that as a ghost, the surgeon can 'enter' the body of the intern he dislikes, but only the intern's body, and nobody else's! What will the main character do? Will he save his patients using the intern's body? Will he give up the glory to the young and not-so-pleasant intern? The last one's not as simple as it seems. The intern is incredibly talented, and only the genius ghost surgeon can see it.
The main characters' stories are intricately woven together, and I found them very interesting.
The drama is almost philosophical, exploring themes of life, death, love, friendship, happiness, humility, and acceptance.
Main characters in 'The Ghost Doctor'
♦ Genius cardio-thoracic surgeon, Professor Cha Eun-bin (actor Rain)
I was initially introduced to him as an arrogant and proud man, a doctor in designer suits. He describes himself:
First of all, I don't just treat the first patients I come across, because I'm not just a doctor
Secondly, I don't deal with emergency situations
Thirdly - these hands are only for those *in general, not for everyone*)))
But as the story develops, we learn more about him.
As a ghost, he learns a lot about who his friend was, who betrayed him, who's glad about his misfortune, and who's genuinely concerned about him and cares for him with all their heart.
He's got a love story going on. His love interest is also a doctor. Let's just say she's his love interest. Their relationship is complicated. In the past, they had a deep love, but she left him. He's still hurt and bitter. Throughout the series, their relationship will stabilize, just like a patient recovering from a serious illness.
R - jealousyI found it surprisingly interesting to watch the relationship between the ghost and the living person. It's not even a relationship. They can't even talk to each other. It's just actions, thoughts, and guesses. He sees her, but she doesn't see him.
(Don't worry, the bromance doesn't suffer because of this)
♦ Intern-ordinator Ko Sa Tang (played by Kim Sang Bom)
A carefree and flighty guy, not like Gleb Romanenko, because he's as dull as a wooden post, but he doesn't have any ambitions in practical medicine, it seems. What does he want? To become the hospital director after his mom leaves. Why does he need to be an intern? Just for the sake of itHe's incredibly strong in theory
"He had problems during his studies: he was smarter than the professors.... He often intimidated the professors by asking them extremely complex questions. People even said that the professors learned from him".
However, when asked why he became a doctor, Ko Sa Tang confidently replies "My grandfather told me to, and my mom did too!"His mom and grandfather are the Chairman of the Foundation and the Board of the hospital. So, that answer was fine during the interview
As the series progresses, we'll see the story of a guy who loves medicine with all his heart and dreams of saving people. Simple. For certain reasons, he can't exactly save people right now.
I was blown away by the acting of the main characters – I totally believed everything I saw on screen!
The first meeting of the main characters
Waking up sweetly in a hospital conference room, Ko Saek Tack lazily approaches his superior and extends his hand:
- Oh, I'm holding hands with a famous doctor! Your hands are very soft.
- I take very good care of them.
Now you'll definitely think it's bromance)He barely managed to pull his hand out of the tight grip of Ko Saek Tack
Then Ko Saek Tack spoke even more nonsense that left our genius surgeon in shock, and concluded with a flourish:
'If there are any problems with performing operations, don't hesitate to come to me!'
SmileWhile the new boss is still loading... Ko Saek Tack walks away
Hey, who is he? Hey, who's this idiot?
Professor Ën Min asks his other studentsYou also noticed that almost in all dramas, the main characters call each other idiots, psychos, crazy people at their first meeting, and then fall in love
Well, Ën Min is not exactly thrilled with his new resident
Not exactly thrilled...
Other characters in the drama Ghost Doctor
⬇️⬇️⬇️
♦ Doctor An Ta Hyeon (Ko San-ho) – the best and favorite student of Cha Ën Min
A somewhat ambiguous character. It arouses curiosity and respect at first, then confusion, then pity.♦ Han Saek Won (Tae In Ho) – The hospital director's deputy, that is, Mom Saek Tack's deputy. He's short, so he must be very angry. 'Fell' for the main character's love interest
A very unpleasant person, although he's a relative of Saek Tack, but he doesn't smell of nobility at all♦ Son Na Eun, whom Son Tak calls Crystal (I have no idea why), is really sweet with Son Tak.
Her story really caught my attention. She's super perceptive... she slaps Intern Ko on the shoulder so hard that it knocks Professor Eun Min off his feet😂
♦ Cha Se Jin (Yoo In Na) - the former/current/future genius surgeon
She's also an interesting character. Her story is well-developed and well-explored too
♦ Ghost 1 - Tae Sung (Son Dong Il) - the ghost who's been roaming the hospital for ages, and 'looks out' for her
Tae SungHe's a super mysterious character. The only ghost whose body is actually dead, not in a comaHe says 'I'm a free soul' (meaning he's not 'tied' to his body). Jealous of me? - Die
He's really kind, warm, and caring. Often helps Eun Min with words and actions
♦ Ghost 2 - a closed-off but sensitive guy. While our genius surgeon was conscious, he thought he'd never wake up. But as a ghost, the main character discovers what happened before he fell into a coma, and gets a chance at recovery.
♦ Ghost 3 - a sweet and diligent girl with a similar story to the guy above ⬆️
♦ Ghost 4 - Han Guk Chan (Han Sun Hyun) - this character has a tough life. But he's not pessimistic and is actually the kindest and brightest ghost
•••
I really loved this drama because the stories of all the characters, even the secondary ones, are really well-developed
Interesting moments
♥ Professor and resident walk side by side through the hospital hallway, everyone staring at their otherworldly beauty, they're both unbeatable, and then they hit the escalator. Who gives way? Now!
Buch I loved watching Son Tak being sent away by En Ma-in to do some emergency surgeries - and if he didn't like it, he could either complain to his grandfather or tattle to his mother.
He could either complain to his grandfather or tattle to his mother.
Watching En Ma-in, now a spirit, meet other spirits in the hospital
I loved watching the other spirits try to possess Son Tak like En Ma-in could, but they just couldn't seem to get it right.
You need bromance - I don't think I need to explain that one.
I loved watching Son Tak meticulously practice stitching on anything he could find.
I loved watching the desperation in Son Tak's eyes when he couldn't save a patient, despite his best efforts...
I loved watching the brilliant surgeon entrust Son Tak with a real operation.
________
Actually, I have some other favorite moments, but I won't share them because they're a bit too spoilery, sorry!
________
Pros of the drama
• The plot
• Operations! I'm no doctor, but it all seemed so realistic: internal organs, blood, chest cavities... aaaa!
• Well-developed characters
• A philosophy of life, death, and destiny. After watching this drama, you'll have plenty to think about!
• The finale
The moment with the dark spirit seemed a bit out of place in this drama.
Other than that, I don't have any other complaints about the drama.
Aftertaste
Now that I think about it, I wanted to revisit the start of the show to clarify a few things in my mind. It's not often that I feel the need to do this.
There were so many important things I wanted to think about... I wanted to remember those who aren't with us anymore.
Verdict
I really enjoyed it! I'd definitely recommend 'The Ghost Doctor' to watch, especially if you like well-developed, offbeat stories and are looking for great bromances between handsome guys
Should you watch 'The Ghost Doctor'? The decision is up to you! I hope my review can help you make up your mind.
P. S. Don't be put off by the medical theme - it just adds to the story's flavor)
That's all!

Got any other recommendations for shows with great bromances?
I've got at least one more:
Bad and Crazy - those guys have even more intense contact than the ones in 'The Ghost Doctor'! 👍
And there's 'Dorama Demon' (Tokyo Babylon) with a decent bromance, but it's got a strong romantic plotline too
