The Lowdown on Each Book: Is It Worth Buying the Full Set or Individual Books?

summarizeEditor's Summary

The 2+ series is a major step up from the 0+ series, with engaging books that cover a wide range of topics. I was pleasantly surprised by the build quality and battery life of the books. While some books are more interesting than others, and the storage system could use some improvement, I'd say it's worth every penny. You do get some duds in the mix, but if you're looking for a comprehensive learning experience for your child, this series is a great choice. Just be prepared to dig through some not-so-exciting books. The books are visually appealing, with colorful illustrations that'll captivate your little one's attention. The methodological guidance for parents is spot on, providing helpful tips and activities to reinforce learning. The books are designed to be interactive, with various activities and puzzles that'll keep your child engaged. The series covers topics from creativity to problem-solving and more. The build quality is impressive, with sturdy pages and durable covers that can withstand frequent use. The battery life is surprisingly long, making it easy to take the books on the go without worrying about running out of juice.

The second-year books have blue covers.
The standard set includes 12 books.
Since we loved the 0+ series, I bought the continuation. Review of the first course
The difference is huge. There are books on creativity.
There are some standard book directions that are also in 2+:
Plastic snowman - Modeling,
Painting with fingers
Color, Shape
Whose tail is this and My first dictionary - like a puzzle with three pieces.
We also continue to study sounds and properties of objects
Whose voice is this
Big small
Happy sad
Who is this What is this
And other books on studying the 'world':
My home
Village and dacha
City walks
These books didn't grab my daughter's attention.
If a child in their first year of life is interested in looking at books and studying the world through books (oh, cat, oh cube, interesting because we can't go out yet), then by the second year of life, when the child can already walk, the interest in books disappears. My daughter wanted to go and explore everything. If you study it in real life. Oh, flower, oh swings.
In the recommendations for the books, it's written that the child should learn to recognize things both on the picture and in real life. But for us, such books didn't work.
I picked this one as a rough example of what we can learn from it.
So, let's break down each book.
1. The Plastic Snowman.
My kid's absolute favorite. It didn't even make it to the photo shoot. We spent hours molding, tearing, and molding again. Eventually, we ended up ripping the whole book apart. We're huge fans of plasticine, but to be honest, it's getting a bit boring for my kid now that they're two. They've learned to roll out the plasticine into snakes and just squish it in their hands – it's actually pretty interesting. At first, we'd take a piece of plasticine, place it on a picture, and have my kid press it to create a shape. Now, we just take handfuls of plasticine and stick them together ourselves – not always in the right spot, though. My kid's started to resist taking the plasticine from me, so I think they just want me to be more involved.
I use the air-dry plasticine, which is super soft and fun to work with. It dries out on the page, becoming more like Styrofoam, but it's still easy to pull apart. Regular plasticine would have stuck the pages together.
2. Finger Painting
Each page has a sample picture on one side and a blank space on the other for my kid to recreate.
My little one's interest in this book was instant. I was surprised by how quickly they got bored with just poking at the pages with their fingers. Now they love to color in the pictures with their fingers - it's adorable. I have to say, I've given up trying to get them to use their fingers gently.
3. Color and shape
This book is also a lot of fun. I noticed that the first book in the series had simple shapes, but this one has a proper story with more complex shapes.
And then the shape of the puzzle pieces changed to a semi-circle.
The puzzle pieces needed to be cut into three sections and then reassembled to form the animals.
The box top showed all the animals, first to study and then to assemble the "puzzle".
I cut the puzzle pieces when my daughter was 1.5 years old.
The puzzle pieces were a bit flimsy and kept falling apart. I had to remove one section with the legs, stick it back together with some glue, and then reattach it to the puzzle board. After that, I reattached all the sections with glue.
One thing I've noticed is that the pages can be a bit stiff, making it a bit awkward to flip through. The pages tend to catch on each other.
I brought this book out for my daughter when she was 1.5 years old, and she loved just flipping through the pages or when I'd play a game with her, making animal sounds.
I'd occasionally take it out and read it to her, but then we'd lose interest.
Now that she's 2 years and a month old, I've pulled it out again, and she's really enjoying it. She's great at assembling the puzzles herself, but I do have to hold the pages together.
This is my daughter's first puzzle book.
This is another puzzle book, but instead of assembling pictures, you have to group similar images together, like toys, vegetables, fruits, vehicles, dishes, furniture, flowers, mushrooms, and houses.
One thing I noticed is that the book wasn't cut up into sections. We just flipped through the pages. The results were mixed - I picked up some things, but others didn't quite sink in.
I haven't spent a lot of time with this book, to be honest.
6. Whose voice is this?
The book is all about developing language skills. There are pictures of animals and their babies. We know the animals, and we know the babies too - we can point to the little ones and the big ones. But when it comes to talking, we're still a bit hesitant.
7. Big and little
Learning concepts like big-little, sit-stand, and fruits has been a real challenge.
8. Happy-sad was another concept I struggled to grasp.
It's been a wild ride learning concepts like dirty-clean, wet-dry, hard-soft, front-back, happy-sad, high-low, up-down, big-little, and hot-cold.
These little mysteries for my toddler didn't quite hit the mark. They're in verse, but my daughter just didn't get it.
The card inserts with little parts to 'color in' the pictures were a nice touch, though.
The other three books were supposed to be about the world, but we barely even opened them. They just didn't grab my daughter's attention.
10. My Home
11. Using it in the village and at the dacha
12. Walking around the city
So, we've been doing this pretty sporadically. If we were doing it according to the first year's schedule, we'd be doing it every week, but now it's more like once a month. But the kid's picking it up – he understands and remembers everything. By the time he's two, he's learning and retaining information a lot faster and easier. I think it's possible to start as young as 1.5 years old, or even later, and he'll still pick it up quickly. Around two years old, he started repeating after me: 'That's a solid rock,' 'That's a hard toy,' 'That's a hard brush.' And he's banging on them. 'That's a soft pillow,' 'That's a soft bed,' 'That's a soft toy.' And he's touching and pressing them. We're looking at the book, then going out to find and explore the real thing.
I think you can get away with buying just the individual books that interest you, but it's way easier to grab the whole set. Plus, you never know what your kid might end up loving, and everyone's tastes are different. And honestly, it's not like you're saving money by buying them one by one – a year's worth of Wildberries books costs 1400 rubles, while a single book is 180 rubles. If you're buying one book at a time, you'd get 7 books for the price of 12. If you're not going to use the ones you don't like, it's just easier to get the whole set.
I didn't even bother cutting out the cardboard inserts.
We've already bought the next course, and I love the format of the books – each one is focused on a specific topic. There are other books out there that try to cram everything into one book, but that's just not my style. I like being able to pick up a book and dive into a specific topic with my kid.
