A Refreshing Take on a Timely Issue - This Movie Really Hits Home
I stumbled upon Yorgos Lanthimos after watching his buzzworthy film 'Poor Things' (2023). The second film on my list was 'The Lobster', which I picked randomly. I later found out it was part of a list of the most shocking films... What a great choice, I'd say!
The movie's concept and storyline really caught my attention and struck a chord with me. I mean, there have always been extremes and exaggerations when it comes to various social issues, but this film's take on it is quite thought-provoking.
One thing that struck me about the movie is how relevant its theme is, especially in today's world. I think it's largely due to the lack of communication and socialization that's become a result of our lives being dominated by gadgets, computer tech, social media, and robotics – all of which have become a substitute for real human interaction.
Humans are fundamentally social creatures that can't be separated from society. We're the only species that's capable of altering our environment to suit our needs, creating a social sphere that's unique to us. It's only through social interactions and communication with others that we become human. An individual who's isolated from society from birth remains an animal.
The social aspect of human nature is reflected in our ability to communicate verbally, our willingness to engage in work that benefits society, and our capacity for conscious action and creativity.
Human evolution takes place in two directions: biological evolution and social evolution.
I've got to say, the movie really made me think about how we raise people to be social beings. The idea of raising someone in a controlled environment, without any real freedom of choice or self-expression, is just not working. It's a recipe for disaster, and Alejandro González Iñárritu really drove that point home with his film.
One thing that's still bugging me is how the parents managed to keep their kids hidden from the world. I mean, the kids aren't exactly kids anymore, and I'm struggling to understand how they could keep this a secret from the hospital, school, police, and everyone else. I suppose it's not the most pressing issue, but it's definitely something that's been on my mind while watching this.
I've gotta say, the raunchy scenes in this film really threw me off. The whole thing felt like it was ripped straight from a porn flick. I mean, why do we need to see those close-up shots of, ahem, private parts? It just didn't sit right with me.
What really bugged me, though, was that the actors involved were, shall we say, a bit on the older side. I guess that's just part of the Jorgos Lanthimos style, huh? Not my cup of tea, but to each their own, I suppose.
The ending of the movie is both amazing and terrifying! I mean, it's totally predictable, but the amount of blood is intense. If you're squeamish, you might want to look away. The final shot leaves you wondering what happens next to the Man without a Fang.
