I stumbled upon The Housekeeper by Nita Prose a few weeks ago, and it's been one of my favorite book discoveries in a while. I'm excited to share why I enjoyed it so much.
About The Housekeeper novel
The story centers around Molly, a 25-year-old housekeeper at a high-end hotel. She's deeply dedicated to her job and genuinely believes it's her calling.
Molly struggles with social interactions, but she's meticulous about following hotel protocols, making her an exceptional housekeeper.
She gets along poorly with her colleagues, but that's not something she's aware of since she takes everything very literally. However, she does have a soft spot for Juan Manuel, a fellow hotel staff member who works as a dishwasher.
Mister Preston, the hotel's concierge, has taken Molly under his wing, kind of like a father figure. She's also developed a crush on Rodney, the hotel's head bartender, and thinks she has a chance with him.
Molly's had past experiences with romantic relationships, which unfortunately ended badly. Her ex-boyfriend disappeared, leaving her with no savings - money that she and her grandmother had been saving for her education.
Molly's been living alone since her grandmother passed away nine months ago.
When a VIP guest at the hotel is found dead, suspicion falls on the hotel's strange and introverted housekeeper...
Why I loved The Housekeeper
First off, I was pleasantly surprised by the author's writing style. As I read the novel, I genuinely believed that the narrator was someone on the autism spectrum.
Secondly, the plot was engaging without being overly complex - I found myself reading it in one sitting without wanting to put it down.
Lastly, despite some predictable moments, the ending still managed to surprise me.
I have to say it's refreshing to see a literary debut like The Housekeeper succeed so well. If you're looking for a lighthearted mystery that's both interesting and captivating, this novel is definitely worth checking out.
I think one of the things that sets The Housekeeper apart is its unique blend of humor and heart. The author does a great job of balancing Molly's quirks and flaws with her relatable struggles and desires.
Overall, I'd highly recommend The Housekeeper to anyone who enjoys a good mystery with a strong, quirky protagonist.
