I'll say right off the bat that the book is tough to understand, so it's sometimes evaluated negatively. But that doesn't change the fact that it's the greatest novel of our time.

Plinio was a boy from the outside world who was invited to join the Order. He became a thorn in the side of the Castalian way of life, and I found myself defending the Order against his arguments and criticisms. But to do that, I had to understand, reason, and accept the values I was defending...

I spent several months living with the Elder Brother, a hermit who had dedicated his life to chinesology.
It's wonderful to read about his secluded life in a bamboo grove, his idyllic existence in a Chinese-inspired setting, and his life in harmony with himself and the world.

One of the things that first struck me about the way the Elder Brother and the Knabe spent their days was how simple and unassuming it all seemed. They'd spend their time pondering, watching the goldfish, tending to the bamboo grove, transcribing ancient scrolls, cooking up soup and tea, and practicing the I Ching.
But what looked like a quiet, isolated existence on the surface was actually a kind of perfection.I'm not surprised that the Knabe would go on to build his first Game of Life according to the principles of a traditional Chinese house, and that it would earn him top marks.

One thing that really stood out to me, though, is Knecht's concept of 'awakening'. That's what he called it when you realize you've outgrown your surroundings and it's time to move on to something new and unknown.
For me, that means having the freedom to let go, to take a leap of faith and make a real change. I don't dream of going back to my old life - I dream of being able to let go when it's time to move on, and taking a giant leap forward instead.

This idea of moving forward is at the heart of one of Knecht's poems, which he initially called Persevering Beyond but later simplified to Stages. I'll link to the full poem, but here's an excerpt:
...Don't look for a safe haven, don't settle in,
Take one step at a time, without regret,
Keep moving forward, from afar to afar,
And keep growing, keep reaching higher...
If you take a closer look at the poem, you might even be able to piece together the ending of the novel - although, to be honest, the ending still doesn't make complete sense to me.
