I turned to freelance platforms like Kwork during the pandemic when I desperately needed some cash. As a creative professional, I had built a portfolio through free work on my own pages, but I needed a more reliable way to earn a living. That's when I decided to list my services on Kwork, a freelance platform that promised to connect me with clients in need of my skills.

At first, I was excited to join the platform and start working on projects. I submitted my videos as professional examples, highlighting my experience in video editing, translations, and self-publishing. I even created separate cards for each service, making it easy for clients to find me. However, I soon realized that the platform had its own set of challenges.

Firstly, the process of filling out my profile was a nightmare. I had to spend hours creating a portfolio that met the platform's requirements, which included at least five videos for each service. I had to remount my service presentation videos, take decent photos for my avatar, and even create separate cards for each service. It was a lot of work, and I had no guarantee of getting paid for it.

Secondly, the platform's algorithm for distributing orders among registered freelancers was flawed. Instead of dividing orders evenly among everyone, the platform allowed clients to choose from dozens or even hundreds of responders. This meant that I had to compete with other freelancers for each project, and the chances of getting selected were slim.

I tried responding to job postings and searching for interesting service cards, but it was a dead-end. I realized that the platform was designed to favor clients, not freelancers. The platform took a 20% commission on client payments, and freelancers were left with the rest, minus any fees for withdrawing the money.

It wasn't until my third year on the platform that a decent client finally reached out to me, looking for services related to my language skills. We worked together multiple times, and that was it. I realized that getting regular work and a decent income on Kwork was possible, but only if you managed to reach the top of the rating and get displayed in the most prominent spots.

However, getting to the top of the rating required a lot of effort and time. You had to complete a lot of orders, respond quickly to clients, and provide high-quality work. It was like a never-ending competition, where freelancers were pitted against each other for the sake of the platform's profits.

I'm not planning to create a fake impression of being super busy, and honesty in the freelance world is sadly not in style. In my book, honesty means equal opportunities for everyone, no ratings, no competition, and no paid ads. It's like a regular office job, where you're hired and you get assigned tasks based on your skills. You don't have to fight for a spot or pay to get work assigned to you. Everyone shows up to their workstation, and their tasks are already waiting for them.

Sites like Kwork could easily work like a regular job, with each freelancer getting orders directly in their account. You get a task, you complete it, and you move on. But the creators of these platforms haven't offered anything like that to videographers, translators, or editors. And if they do offer it in another field, it's at an unreasonably low pay, not matching the amount of work you put in.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't recommend Kwork to anyone. Maybe in the future, I'll try registering through self-employment and see how it goes. Then I'll update this review.
