I recently took a break from my usual detective and thriller reads to dive into some historical novels. One of them was 'The Beach of Sorrows' by Daniela Raimondi, a family saga that follows the Kazadio family from the 18th to the mid-20th century.
The book's premise is pretty intriguing, and I was eager to get started. The author's use of historical settings and family dynamics makes it easy to become immersed in the world of the Kazadios.
- Hardcover book, white paper, 480 pages.
- Year of publication: 2025
- Publisher: Azbooka-Atticus
- Age restrictions: 16+
On the back of the book, you can find a brief description of the plot:
Here's a photo of the first pages of the book:
I found it a bit tough to get into at first, but the plot soon picked up and I was hooked. I found myself wanting to know more and more about the Kazadio family.
The story starts in 1800, with Jacomo Kazadio, a melancholic and dreamy man, marrying a young gypsy woman named Viola. But neither the wedding nor the birth of their son, who could hear the dead, could save Jacomo from his depression, and he eventually hangs himself. From then on, the story follows his descendants, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Each new generation of the Kazadio family has a boy or girl who's similar to Jacomo - not in appearance, but in their inner nature. They're strange dreamers who ruin their lives with their wild ideas and behavior. And then there's Viola's prediction of some tragedy that will inevitably happen in the next generation. Although they knew about it and passed it down from generation to generation, it didn't help prevent the inevitable, so the tragedies kept happening.
I was curious about how the author would handle the unusual names of some family members, like Dollaro and Sneginka. It's not just dog names, but real names! How can someone with such names have a normal life?
The story takes place in Italy and far-off Brazil, and not just there. The author does a great job of transporting you to different times and places.
There are so many characters, each with their own story, that you feel like you're flipping through the pages of a family archive, sometimes happy, sometimes sad with them.
One thing that really stood out to me was the way the author weaves together the different storylines and generations. It's a complex and intricate plot, but it's also engaging and easy to follow.
I also appreciated the author's use of historical detail. The book is set in a specific time period, and the author does a great job of capturing the atmosphere and culture of the time.
Of course, no book is perfect, and there are some things that didn't quite work for me. The characters, while well-developed, can be a bit difficult to keep track of at times. And some of the plot twists felt a bit predictable.
Overall, though, I would highly recommend 'The Beach of Sorrows' to fans of historical fiction. It's a compelling and engaging read that will keep you turning the pages until the very end.
Verdict: The author has done a great job, and it's definitely worth reading, so I give it a solid four out of five stars and would recommend it.
