Why I'm Still Hooked on This Retro Console

summarizeEditor's Summary

I'm a total sucker for retro consoles, and the Tetris Brick Game E-9999 is no exception. This thing's got it all: nostalgia, simplicity, and a price that's actually reasonable. I mean, what's not to love? The Tetris Brick Game E-9999 has been a staple of my gaming collection for weeks now, and I'm still finding new ways to enjoy it. From the classic gameplay to the sleek design, this console's got a certain charm that's hard to resist. And let's be real, it's not every day you come across a retro console that's still this much fun to play. I've been using it for a while now, and I'm still impressed by its value for money. The build quality is surprisingly solid, with buttons that feel like they're built to last. The battery life is longer than I expected, which is a major plus in my book. Plus, the ease of use is top-notch, even for a retro console. I've been playing it nonstop, and I'm still not tired of it. It's a great way to unwind after a long day, and it's a lot of fun to play with friends and family. Overall, I'd highly recommend the Tetris Brick Game E-9999 to anyone looking for a retro gaming experience that won't break the bank.

Why I'm Still Hooked on This Retro Console
I'm a total sucker for retro consoles. There's just something about the nostalgia factor that draws me in. So, when I stumbled upon the Tetris Brick Game E-9999, I knew I had to give it a try.
Tetris is a classic game from my school days. Back then, computers were still cathode-ray tube models, and instead of smartphones with touch screens, we had button phones. I remember buying electronic toys in 2017, but I'm not sure why I didn't get this one back then. I saw them in Aisha, but I didn't pick one up. Nowadays, I don't see them in offline stores (at least, I haven't come across any). But thanks to my friend Liao from China, we can now order a lot of stuff on marketplaces that's hard to find in stores.
So, I ended up with the Tetris Brick Game E-9999. It's the same console I had as a kid, but this one's a bit different. I ordered two of them, one to give away later. The price was around $300.
The console uses two AA batteries, which is a nice touch for a retro console. It's a simple yet effective way to power the device, and that's something I appreciate about this console.
Control is via buttons, which is a classic design for retro consoles. The four buttons at the top are (from left to right): power on/off, start/pause, sound on/off, and reset. The largest right button lets you choose games or access in-game features (like firing a tank or speeding up in a racing game). On the left, we have a joystick with control buttons (up, down, left, and right). Most games use the left and right buttons, but in tank games or Snake, you need to use all four.
Let me give you a quick rundown of the most basic games. The first game in these consoles is tank games. It's simple: just shoot enemy tanks. I've played a lot of tetris-style games as a kid, and usually, the speed of the tanks would increase with each level, and then a big tank would show up after completing the first part of the level, which you could only kill by hitting its gun with a few bullets.
But in this tetris model, which I'm reviewing, there's no big tank, and the speed is the same across all levels. The levels get harder with obstacles appearing on the battlefield.
Another thing that's weird - you can't pause the game like you can with other games. But if you turn off the console, your progress will be saved.
Of course, every tetris game has those reaction-based racing levels. This model has two versions of it. The first one is where you have to dodge between other cars without crashing into them. If you crash four times, the levels will reset.
The second version is where you have to drive through obstacles without crashing. It's a great way to improve your reaction time. I remember when I was a kid, I could beat those levels at top speed, even though it seemed impossible at first.
No tetris game is complete without a snake, right? This model has one too. And just like the tanks, the snake's speed doesn't increase as you level up - instead, new obstacles appear on its path.
I've gotta say, the star of the show on this console is definitely Tetris. The game's even named after it. There are loads of different variations of Tetris here, from super simple to super challenging. The basic idea is to clear lines by fitting together different shaped blocks. As soon as you clear a line, it disappears. The key is to avoid letting the blocks pile up all the way to the top, or you're out of the game. The faster the blocks fall, the harder it gets.
I'm not even scratching the surface with all the games on this console. There are some super simple ones, and some that are way more complex. There's even a tennis game.
Then there are two more games where blocks fall from the top of the screen. If they reach the bottom, you lose. In one of them, you've got to blast the blocks away with shots, each shot clearing one block at a time. The other one's a bit more challenging, but way more fun: your shots don't clear the blocks, they add new ones. You've got to time your shots just right to clear lines and avoid filling up the screen.
So, why bother with this console when you can just download games on your smartphone?
I've got two reasons for that:
I found it way easier to play on these. The console is designed for comfortable hand placement, with a finger recess. For some, it'll be a blast from the past. And for those who didn't experience the classic Tetris, this console will be like a time capsule from the past. It's essential to understand that Tetris isn't a substitute for pricey consoles. It's like comparing chess to The Sims - they're in different leagues altogether. By the way, check out my review on Chess, Chess, and Checkers
I don't think calling Tetris an electronic puzzle does it justice. Puzzle games like chess and checkers require strategy and problem-solving, but Tetris is different. It's more about reaction time and hand-eye coordination.
The games on this console help develop your reaction time and hand dexterity, and they're great for unwinding.
On one hand, the games are incredibly simple, with nothing complicated to grasp. But, as you start playing, you realize it's not as easy as it seems. You need attention to detail and patience.
The downsides of the device.
The downsides of this console are pretty much a direct result of its super-low price. The flimsy plastic build breaks easily with a single drop on the floor.
The buttons wear out quickly from frequent and intense use.
The games can freeze, and the console might not turn on at all.
Sometimes, even with a brand-new console, the buttons feel unresponsive, requiring you to press harder. I've had consoles where this wasn't an issue.
The battery compartment lid can be finicky, and I've had to use tape to keep it in place.
Expecting miracles from a console priced like a fast-food meal is unrealistic.
Tetris is a great toy for both kids and adults. It's still relevant today, in the age of computer games and AI. That's because any complex game requires time, engagement, and system resources. Sometimes, all you need is something simple but entertaining. Just to keep yourself occupied, take your mind off things, and unwind. Plus, it's a great way to train your cognitive skills.
I'm glad I got to experience this kind of game again. It's a great reminder of how far we've come in terms of gaming technology.
