Recently, I had the opportunity to check out a summer 2024 release on a social media platform: a true-crime film about Tana Kach, a 14-year-old girl who got caught up with a school janitor, Thomas Hose, and ended up living with him for 10 years.
Stories like this, where kidnappers and pedophiles hold kids captive, are unfortunately all too common: one of the most popular stories is the biography of Natascha Kampusch. I'm still not entirely sure if Tana had Stockholm syndrome like Natascha, but one thing's for certain: she did what the perpetrator wanted to avoid being hurt or killed; and she was driven by a deep-seated fear formed from years of psychological abuse.
The film adaptation, according to executive producer Elizabeth Smart, is meant to spark a reaction from people. You can read Tanya's full story for free, and the film adaptation is a great way to experience her story in a different way.
When I first spoke with Tanya, I knew I wanted to help her share her story of grooming and abduction, because people still don't understand what grooming is. Thanks to Tanya's honesty, her story will help spread compassion and understanding.
Grooming is establishing adult relationships with a child (and their family members) to gain trust and eventually coerce them. It's a complex issue, and one that requires a lot of education and awareness.
Tanya's book, written after her release, became a bestseller, but it also sparked controversy and skepticism, including from her own father. We'll likely never know the whole truth. The film mentions that the creators embellished the real events on which the film is based to make it more dramatic.
But the kidnapping and confinement of a child for years - that in itself is a drama and a tragedy that Tanya went through. Online, I came across opinions that it was somehow beneficial for Tanya to be living with Jose, locked away...
There was grooming, regular sexual contact without consent, threats of murder and suicide - all the usual stuff. Even an adult person can be overwhelmed by fear and not know how to call the police or escape, as we've seen in many true-crime stories, like the Cleveland Abductions.
I've gotta say, the girl from a tough background - she's got a lot to deal with. She felt abandoned, alone when she came to Thomas for help, and the only person who showed her kindness. Her mind was already messed up by this so-called 'lover', living in a state of numbness and catastrophic fear. And to make matters worse, she trusted this person for a while, thinking they could make her life safer and more secure. 14 years old - not a kid anymore, but not quite an adult yet. Jose took advantage of her transitional period, and it's weird to blame her for willingly living with a predator for so long...
It's the same when you start blaming Natasha Kampusch for not running to the security or screaming for help during those walks to the store with Wolfgang Prickel. I mean...
A victim, years of being convinced she's worthless and doesn't matter, can't rationally overcome the fear and psychological numbness... She lives with a state similar to agoraphobia - no obstacles to leave, but she can't bring herself to do it.
As I continued to watch, I was immersed in the history of Tania's psychological abuse and decade-long imprisonment.
Thomas starts to manipulate her, telling her that he'll always take care of her and she'll be safe with him. Tanya's impressionable teenage mind and her situation make her believe that Thomas is a good guy who's always there for her.
Most true-crime movies are super specific and can feel dragged out and boring. The pacing in the movie 'The Girl in the Picture: The Story of Tanya Kach' is actually pretty slow, lacks sharpness and emotional intensity. But at the same time, this story is actually pretty educational for parents and kids, so I can recommend this film for a one-time watch.
