Skiing Fun at Sviyazhskie Hills Resort: A Kazan Gem
We headed to Kazan for New Year's and Sviyazhskie Hills Resort was our top pick. This awesome resort is nestled near the Volga and Sviyaga rivers – the latter's nicknamed 'bad' because it flows upstream. The scenery's seriously magical – it's hard not to be captivated by the snow-covered landscape.
The resort's about 40 kilometers from Kazan, and we got there by car without any issues. We found the paid parking lot easily, following the signs, and grabbed a map, which we paid for at the exit.
Next up, we rented some gear: we got snowboards and equipment for the girls. The staff were super friendly and helpful, explaining everything and getting us set up without any problems. They even offered to help us pick the right gear for our needs.
I was really blown away by the resort's gorgeous burgundy design – the photos come out looking amazing. They've also got a great selection of equipment for rent, and the staff are more than happy to help you find the perfect gear.
The resort's got a cozy, welcoming vibe that makes it the perfect spot to spend a day on the slopes. The decorations on the premises really add to the atmosphere – it feels like a winter wonderland.
We're not exactly seasoned skiers, so we didn't know what to expect – but the instructors came to our rescue. The girls were really impressed with them. My older daughter had a male instructor, and I thought she'd be a bit awkward, but he totally won her over. She was raving about how great he was afterwards. My younger daughter had a female instructor, and despite being only on the board for the second time in her life, she managed to teach her how to ski without any help. All in all, I was really happy with the instructors – they know exactly how to break it down for kids.
He was completely stoked – he went non-stop for two hours. At first, my husband went with him, then he skied down on his own, and later his sisters joined in and really got into it. The resort's got a great selection of slopes for all skill levels, and the instructors are happy to help you find the perfect one.
I managed to grab it after two hours, and that was only because it got dark outside. That saved us, otherwise he wouldn't have agreed to leave. We ended up having a blast, and the resort's got a great atmosphere that makes you want to come back.
After getting our fill of the rides, we decided to grab some tea and snacks at the cafe on the premises. It was a bit pricey, but we didn't end up eating a full meal, so it wasn't too bad. We paid around 1500 rubles for tea and snacks – the pastries were delicious, and the cafe was cozy.
We visited on December 30th, and we were expecting huge lines, but to our surprise, there were very few people, which was a big plus. The resort's got a great selection of food and drink options, and the cafe's a great place to relax and refuel after a day on the slopes.
After we left the premises, we paid for parking and headed back into the city. We had an awesome time at Sviyazhskie Hills Resort, and we'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a fun day on the slopes.
