I've been a fan of the Russian TV show 'Surviving' for years, so I was really looking forward to the new season. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations.
This time around, the season's not set in Dubai or Samarkand, but in Istanbul. I thought the new location would bring some fresh ideas, but all I got was disappointment.
The new season's contestants.
The celebrity team features Magomed Murtaev, a comedian, actor, and showman, who's definitely one of the more interesting contestants. He's a former KVN and Comedy Battle participant.
Maria Gorban is an actress and TV presenter. She's got some great one-liners, but that's about it.
Sergey is a singer. Let's just say he's not the most charming guy.
Kuzma Saprykin is an actor and voice actor. He's a pretty guy, but he's also a bit of a sneak.
Ekaterina Gordon is a radio and TV presenter, lawyer, and public figure. She's got a lot of experience, but she's not exactly the most exciting person.
Mia Boyka is a singer and TV presenter. She's trying to clean up her image after the quadrocopter kid scandal, but it's not working.
Irina Shibetskaya is a homemaker. Yeah, that's right - a homemaker. It's like she's from a different planet.
Anton Zhizhin is an actor. He's not bad, but he's not exactly the most memorable guy either.
The people's team lineup is pretty interesting, too. Alena Blin is a journalist and YouTube channel author. She's a great person, but she's definitely not the strongest contestant.
Alena Grom is a blogger and model from Kaliningrad, 33 years old. She's a mystery to me - it's like she's living in her own little world.
Igor Prokhorov is a professional athlete and volleyball team coach from Tyumen, 30 years old. He's a pretty normal guy, but then he turned out to be a total scumbag.
Darya Vykhodtseva is an entrepreneur from Barnaul. She's got some great ideas, but she's not exactly the most business-savvy person.
Rinaz Raemov is an event host and DJ from Perm. He's got some great energy, but he's not exactly the most reliable guy.
Vladislava Zolotova is a powerlifter from Chelyabinsk Oblast, 23 years old. She's got some great strength, but she's also got a pretty coarse manner of speaking.
Leonid 'Kremeny' Vakhitov is a military veteran, fitness trainer from St. Petersburg, 37 years old. He thinks he's above everyone else, but he's actually just a try-hard.
Sergey Stepanov is a lookalike of singer and musician Lesha Svik, 35 years old. He's got some great looks, but he's not exactly the most interesting guy.
You might have noticed that one 'celebrity' contestant is in the people's team (Alena Blin), and one people's contestant is in the celebrity team (Irina Shibetskaya). It's like the organizers were trying to add some drama and intrigue, but it just ended up looking like a joke.
Surviving Istanbul show reviews
It's clear that the organizers were trying to add some drama and intrigue to the new season, but in reality, they ended up making the public team look like a joke, with Alena Blin taking the heat every time, and Irina getting stuck in the hyenas' team, where the other players were pretending to be nice to her, but it was obvious she was completely out of place.
What can we say about the other contestants?
The star team's 'king of cringe' award goes to singer Sergey, who thought he was the smartest, most charming, and most talented guy, but he ended up being the one who made everyone feel embarrassed.
To understand what I mean, you need to see his actions for yourself.
Coming in second place (in my opinion) are Mia Boyko, who's trying to clean up her image after the quadrocopter kid scandal, and Katya Gordon, who's screaming about being the most honest person in the team, but is actually sucking up to Irina to get some approval from the audience.
Next up is Kuzma Saprykin: he's a pretty guy, but he's also a bit of a sneak, and it's clear he's willing to do whatever it takes to stay on the show longer.
I've seen his fans complaining about his strategy on social media.
Gorbunov is your typical try-hard, fawning over Sergey and Kuzma, and keeping to himself from the rest of the girls.
The public team.
Honestly, this is the most boring public team we've had on the show so far, and it's a shame.
I gotta say, I was initially rooting for Igor - he seemed like a pretty normal guy, a sportsman, but then he turned out to be a total scumbag [check out episode 3] - and I quickly lost interest in him.
The 'master of cringe' award goes to Leonid Vakhitov, aka Mr. Coach, who thinks he's above everyone else [see for yourself]. I'm also not a fan of Vlad Zolotov - his coarse manner of speaking is really off-putting, and Alena Grom is just a mystery to me - it's like she's living in her own little world.
The rest of the contestants are just not interesting to me, so I won't even bother mentioning them.
I'm still fuming about how the team decided to throw Alena Blin under the bus, hoping she'd make it to the finals on her own [same with the 'stars' who sent Iryna packing].
That was a pretty cheap move - I don't know what else to say.
📌 So, what do I dislike about this season?
The new twists in 'Survive in Istanbul' were supposed to add some fresh flavors, but all I got was disappointment.
🔻 The losing team will have to serve the winning team while they're living in the woods.
I've got to say, it's pretty cringeworthy to watch people, especially the more... unsavory types, cook, wash dishes, and perform other acts of servitude towards their opponents.
It looks like these people are essentially serving the wealthy elite, hoping to get scraps from their table. Leftover food, basically. It's entertaining to watch, I'll give them that.
🔻 Now, the show's got this 'Emperor's Treasure' vibe going on: contestants have to run around the city completing tasks to earn immunity.
Personally, I think it's a mess - they've taken a solid show and ruined it by copying elements from other projects.
'It's like a Chinese knockoff,' Alena Blyakhman said.
🔻 And speaking of immunity...
Aside from 'Emperor's Treasure', you'll also notice echoes of 'The Big Feast', hosted by Volya and Utyashova: contestants can find envelopes with immunity passes in their hotel rooms, which would put their team at a disadvantage on the bigger challenges.
🥇 Now, onto the challenges.
I really enjoyed the 'gladiator battles' in the second episode - they were original, complex, and showcased how well each team worked together.
But what really caught my attention in the third episode of Big Test was the weaknesses of both the newcomers and the pros, which I have to admit, didn't impress me either.
Surviving Istanbul reviews comments 3 4 episode
Overall, I'd say this aspect of the show is still holding up – thanks for that, despite the new season not quite living up to my expectations.
Alright, let's get to the intermediate verdict.
I don't want to give this season a thumbs down, but I do think I'll be lowering my rating.
Whether or not to keep watching is up to you.
I've decided I want to see the finale, but unfortunately, it's just not the same as the excitement I felt during the previous seasons.
