A Horror Film That'll Keep You Up at Night

summarizeEditor's Summary

I just watched Sumala, an Indonesian horror film that's got some seriously scary scenes. It starts off as a legend about a vengeful entity terrorizing a village, and it's not for the faint of heart. The film jumps back and forth between the 1940s and 1950s, but the difference between the two eras isn't super noticeable. The storyline's complex, involving pacts with dark forces, twin siblings, and some seriously disturbing themes.

Sumala's got some seriously scary scenes - the kind that'll make you think twice about staying out late at night. This Indonesian horror film starts off as a legend about a vengeful entity terrorizing a village, and it's not for the faint of heart.
The film jumps back and forth between the 1940s and 1950s, but the difference between the two eras isn't super noticeable. It's a non-linear approach that's justified by the complex storyline, which involves pacts with dark forces, twin siblings, and some seriously disturbing themes.
The whole family is the main cast, but the girl takes center stage. From a young age, she's exhibiting some pretty weird behavior, and some of the most disturbing scenes are linked to her actions in the first half of the film.
Things take a dark turn around the middle, and the killings and deaths become increasingly graphic. I have to admit, I was expecting something less intense.
The film clocks in at two hours, and I didn't feel like it dragged on. You'll notice that the story starts off slow and dramatic, but then it takes a sharp turn and ends with some genuinely chilling horror.
My only gripe with the film is how the adults react to the girl's behavior. It's not just about physical strength, but also how they handle the situation. To be honest, it looked a bit unrealistic, and it was the only thing that marred my impression.
Some characters start to develop towards the end, like the girl's family. Her father and mother show their true colors, and it's a pretty realistic portrayal.
There's no real twist or surprise, since the girl's backstory is revealed from the start. Sumala doesn't leave you guessing, but it has a solid storyline that feels rooted in reality.
I was curious to see how it all ended and how the characters would react. The conclusion was unexpected, but it was a good one, and it didn't disappoint.
When I saw the poster, I thought there'd be more of a focus on nature, but it's hardly present at all.
Sumala won't leave you sleeping with the lights on, but it's a chilling horror film that uses disturbing scenes to tell a realistic moral tale.
