Why I Prefer the Circus to the Theater for Family Fun

summarizeEditor's Summary

The St. Petersburg State Circus on Fontanka is a must-visit for families, but it's not the most family-friendly option. I've been going there for years, but lately, I've started to think that the circus might not be the best choice for families with young kids. The shows are impressive, with talented performers and thrilling acts, but the seating is super narrow, and the shows are way too long for little ones. I'm not saying the circus is a total letdown, but it's definitely not the most practical option for families.

Why I Prefer the Circus to the Theater for Family Fun
Hello everyone! I'm a big fan of spending my weekends doing something cultural. The theater, museum, and of course, the circus are all great options for a fun day out.
Recently, my husband and I went back to the St. Petersburg State Circus on Fontanka to see an Italian troupe with tigers and elephants. We love catching most of the shows they have here.
The circus itself is really beautiful and atmospheric – you can feel the history inside. I used to only go to traveling circuses when I was a kid.
But there's a huge downside to the circus: the ridiculously narrow seats. If you're a tall or big person, it's going to be a real struggle. My knees keep bumping into the front of the seat, and if you get up to leave, you have to stand. Not exactly the most comfortable experience.
Another reason I wouldn't take my kid here is the long show duration. It's about three hours long, with one intermission. That's a bit much for little ones, especially if they're not good at sitting still.
As for the tickets, the good seats with a clear view of the performers cost around 5,000 rubles on average. Yeah, it's a bit pricey, but it's worth it for the better view and more comfortable seating. We've bought cheaper tickets before and ended up sitting under the dome – not great. Don't even get me started on the seats that face away from the performers – it totally ruins the experience. Best to buy tickets in advance, or you'll be stuck with bad seats.
The shows change about twice a year, so if you go regularly, you'll never get bored with the same old thing.
When we do take our kid to the circus, we choose seats carefully and make sure they can handle the long show. If you plan ahead and pick your seats wisely, you'll have a fantastic time.
I still prefer the circus to the theater for family fun, despite its drawbacks. The atmosphere, performances, and history all come together to create a unique experience that's hard to find elsewhere.
So, if you're looking for a fun and memorable day out with your family, consider giving the circus a try. Just be sure to plan ahead and choose your seats carefully.
