Skönvik IKEA Dresser

I've got to say, this Skönvik IKEA dresser is a total lifesaver for anyone trying to stay on top of their closet game. It's a total space-saver, perfect for tiny rooms or apartments, and the build quality is seriously impressive. I mean, it's an IKEA piece, but it feels way sturdier than you'd expect. Plus, the compact design makes it easy to fit into even the smallest nooks and crannies. And let's be real, who doesn't love a good excuse to declutter and get organized?

A Skovby Dresser That Fell Short of My Expectations

summarizeEditor's Summary

I'm a total sucker for dressers - they're the ultimate space-savers, and they keep your clothes organized without taking up too much room. After our recent move, I decided to opt for a couple of dressers instead of a big wardrobe to keep our everyday essentials in order. I ended up buying two dressers from IKEA: the massive MALM with six drawers for the two adults, which doubles as a TV stand and holds other tech devices, and a smaller SKOVBY with five drawers for the kids. The SKOVBY dresser is a real head-turner - it's a vertical stunner with five sliding drawers in a pure white finish. We snagged it at the IKEA warehouse, but unfortunately, it didn't quite live up to my expectations. I was really hoping for a solid, reliable dresser that would keep our clothes organized and looking great, but what I got was a piece of furniture that's got some major flaws.

I'm a total sucker for dressers - they're the ultimate space-savers, and they keep your clothes organized without taking up too much room. After our recent move, I decided to opt for a couple of dressers instead of a big wardrobe to keep our everyday essentials in order.
So, we ended up buying two dressers from IKEA: the massive MALM with six drawers for the two adults, which doubles as a TV stand and holds other tech devices, and a smaller SKOVBY with five drawers for the kids.
The SKOVBY dresser is a real head-turner - it's a vertical stunner with five sliding drawers in a pure white finish. We snagged it at the IKEA Teply Stan store for 4600 rubles, and I have to say, it's a pretty sweet deal. The SKOVBY is a compact dresser that measures 70 x 112 cm. It's super slim and takes up minimal space, which is exactly why I love dressers - they're not bulky and don't hog space.
The materials used to make the SKOVBY dresser are pretty interesting:
The frame and front panel of the box are made of MDF, high-pressure laminate (melamine), and plastic edging.
The front panel is made of MDF and paper foil.
The side panel is made of MDF, paper foil, and plastic edging.
The bottom of the box and the rear panel are made of plywood and acrylic paint.
Everything was packed to perfection, and we were stoked to see that nothing was damaged during transportation. All the parts were in place, and we were ready to assemble our new dresser. However, assembling the SKOVBY turned out to be a bit of a nightmare. I'm not sure if it was just me, but the instructions were super confusing, and the screws wouldn't go in smoothly. The drawers were stuck, and I had to constantly adjust and tweak things to get it right.
We followed the instructions to the letter - my partner and I have assembled countless pieces of IKEA furniture together, and this was the first time we encountered such major problems.
After all the fuss and fiddling, the dresser was finally assembled. But even after all that, there were some issues that really got under my skin:First off, the drawers don't slide in smoothly - some of them jerk and stutter, as if something's blocking them, although visually there's no obstruction.
Secondly, some of the drawers don't fit tightly, leaving a visible gap when closed. This photo shows it perfectly - the drawers are closed all the way, but you can still see the gaps:
I'm guessing it's probably our mistake somewhere during the assembly of the dresser's base. But with other IKEA furniture, we've never encountered anything like this.Issue number 3: the SKOVBY dresser is ridiculously cramped. Despite having a bunch of drawers, they're all super narrow and not very deep.
I've got a bunch of drawers, but they're all really skinny, so I can only fit the essentials in there. The top two drawers are especially narrow, so you can only fit underwear and socks in them. The other three drawers are a bit wider, but still pretty cramped, so I only use them for storing things the kids use regularly.
It's a total contrast to the MALM dresser, which is super spacious. The surface of the SKOVBY dresser is super glossy, which makes it a real pain to clean. You can see every speck of dust, and it's a real hassle to wipe it down. The drawers don't even have handles, which is a bit of a bummer. They've got that same swoopy edge as the MALM drawers, but when you try to open them, it's not always smooth sailing. Some of the drawers are still a bit stiff, even after a few weeks of use. I guess they just needed to break in a bit. There's a wall bracket on the dresser, which is mainly for safety reasons. We didn't end up using it, though - the dresser is pretty sturdy, and our kids aren't the type to hang off furniture.I'd give this dresser a solid 3 out of 5. The good news is:
The price is pretty reasonable.
Over time, the drawers have started to glide out more smoothly, even if there's still a bit of a gap.
I've learned to stack things vertically, which helps the dresser hold a decent amount of our kids' stuff.
The dresser looks pretty modern, even if it's a bit plain. The surface is a bright, glossy white, and I've gotten used to it, but I still prefer the look of real wood.
I wouldn't have bought this dresser if I'd known how much hassle it would be. So, I wouldn't recommend it - there are better options out there in IKEA.
Check out my other reviews of IKEA furniture:
- The most popular soft toy from IKEA - the Akula Blokhoy. Ideal for a 3-meter hug.
- A children's folding bed with a slatted bottom from IKEA. Three modes of extension, powerful, steel
- A dresser for the living room - A stylish and very spacious dresser from IKEA - MALM with 6 drawers
I've had the chance to try out a few different beds and sofas from IKEA, and I've gotta say, they're really stepping up their game. Here are a few of my favorites.
First up, the Frickheten sofa bed. I was blown away by the build quality - the buttons feel solid and the whole thing is super sturdy. Plus, the storage compartment is a total game-changer. It's perfect for stashing away blankets, pillows, or whatever else you need to keep out of the way.
Next up, the additional bed from IKEA. It's a standard issue folding bed, but it's actually really comfortable and comes with a decent mattress. It's also surprisingly sturdy - I was able to put a load of 120kg on it without any issues.
I've also been using the Leirvik metal bed, and I'm absolutely loving it. The design is super sleek and modern, and the figure-eight headboard is a total showstopper. Plus, the bed itself is huge - 160/200cm is a lot of real estate, but it's perfect for sprawling out after a long day.
Finally, I've been sleeping on the Hillestad mattress from IKEA, and I'm hooked. It's seriously the most comfortable thing I've ever slept on - it's perfect for getting a good night's sleep, whether you're unwinding after a long day or getting cozy with your partner.
