For the whole film, James is trying to find his love by running through the streets and buildings of this creepy town, while also avoiding all the monsters lurking in the shadows of Silent Hill. At the same time, we're shown a story that jumps back and forth between the past and the present.
The only time I got a chill was when the sirens first went off. But the monsters that followed just didn't scare me. There was no real tension or atmosphere like the first film had.
The slow-motion monsters looked ridiculous and not scary at all, like they were just stuck in place. The whole film feels disjointed and dull. James' struggles just didn't evoke any emotions from me. I didn't like the acting at all. Mary's character was the only one that sort of worked, but even that was a stretch.
I'd still classify this film as a psychological horror, but a really bad and unsuccessful one. It feels like I'm watching some crazy person's fever dream, made by a low-budget studio.
Frankly, the ending was a bit of an anticlimax. It's not the main issue, but at least it showed something vaguely decent, which slightly made up for the first 1.5 hours of utter nonsense.
I was honestly expecting something way better from this director. This movie seems even worse than the second one. It's just not worth releasing.
I get why fans are upset, even though I've never played the game, but this is just really weak and half-baked. Of course, people will go see it because of nostalgia for the first film. And the poster even features all the key monsters from Silent Hill, which is meant to get you excited, but my advice is to save your time!
Even without the connection to the first film or the game, this movie is just bad. It's on par with the endless stream of weak and mediocre horror movies that have been released over the years.
