I just got back from an incredible adventure in Sri Lanka, and I'm still reeling from the experience.
When visiting a new country, I always try to pack in as many unique sights as possible. So, when we were invited to explore Sigiriya rock, the 8th wonder of the world, I jumped at the chance.
Sigiriya is a massive rock plateau that rises an impressive 370 meters above sea level and 170 meters above the surrounding plain in the heart of Sri Lanka.
We visited as part of a group tour, taking the bus from Hikkaduwa for around 5 hours. As we arrived, I was blown away by the sheer scale of the rock. I thought to myself, 'How on earth are we going to climb to the top?' But, as they say, the eyes may be afraid, but the hands and legs will do the job.
The entrance fee to Sigiriya is 10,500 rupees, which is roughly 35,000 rubles per person. But trust me, every single rupee was worth it.
As I walked through the turnstiles, I found myself in a stunning tropical park that was once the site of a palace. It was like stepping into a different world.
We had a knowledgeable guide who shared some fascinating stories about the king, the gardens, the fountains, and the history of the site. It was really engaging to listen to.
The architecture of the buildings still stands, and it's amazing to touch something historically significant.
As we made our way through the park, exploring all the attractions, we kept moving towards Sigiriya Rock.
As we explored the park, I encountered a lot of monkeys, monitor lizards, and other creatures. It was a real jungle experience!
It's crazy how many people are in the park - it's absolutely packed! Just look at these crowds:
But when we finally made it to Sigiriya, I was blown away - and it's not just the people, it's like a swarm of ants climbing up to the top of the 8th wonder of the world!
Of course, my husband and I weren't any different - we joined the queue too:
As the saying goes, 'the road goes on forever, and the party never ends.' We waited for what felt like an eternity, but the queue moved quickly, and before we knew it, we were making our way up the stairs.
I want to put your mind at ease right off the bat - the climb is completely safe! The stairs are all well-equipped with handrails, making it a breeze to ascend:
The higher we climbed, the more breathtaking the views became:
Along the way to the top, we spotted some incredible sights - ancient frescoes (which, unfortunately, I wasn't allowed to take a photo of), the king's throne, pools, and even the preserved paws of a lion, to name a few...
And finally, we reached the very top! The last two steps were a breeze, and I proudly declared, 'Sigiriya, I've conquered you!'
I've seen some amazing views in my life, but the one from the top of Sigiriya takes the cake. The panorama is simply stunning, it's a real mind-blower!
Being up there, surrounded by the pure tropical air, and experiencing the rush of emotions from being in a new place, it's truly exhilarating. I felt an overwhelming sense of happiness, happiness that I'm alive, that I'm healthy, and that I have the means to travel and see the beauty of the world with my own eyes. For me, Sigiriya is a place of power, a place where all your worries fade away, and your mind and body are rejuvenated.
I 100% recommend visiting Sigiriya to anyone staying on the island of Sri Lanka – you'll be just as blown away as I was!
