A Hidden Gem in Unawatuna: My Peaceful Stay at the Shanti Beach Resort

summarizeEditor's Summary

I headed to Unawatuna to explore Sri Lanka, and the Shanti Beach Resort was my home base. This place is a total gem – it's low-key, but it's got everything you need for a chill stay. The location is key, with the ocean right there and the town just a short walk away. I was a bit worried about the road noise, but it wasn't too bad. The staff was super friendly, and the food was always on point. If you're looking for a laid-back vibe and don't mind being a bit outside of town, Shanti Beach Resort is worth considering.

Heading to Sri Lanka is a real treat, and with so many hotels to choose from, it doesn't make sense to splurge on a fancy one if you're not going to be spending much time there. I was all about exploring the island, so I picked Unawatuna as my base.
My hotel wasn't right in the town itself, but it was just a 20-25 minute walk away. I'm talking about the Shanti Beach Resort, a great choice for those looking for a peaceful vibe.
There are plenty of other small hotels around, and the one thing that really stood out about this place was its location – everything else was pretty good. This hotel has two storeys, and there's also a bungalow in the courtyard with direct access to the ocean.
My room was closer to the road, which was super busy and noisy. If you're looking for peace and quiet, this might be a bit of a problem.
The room itself was a bit small, but it was fine for one person.
The furniture was a bit worn out, and the sheets weren't exactly pristine. If you're a super picky traveler, you might want to know this.
The room was dominated by a bed with a mosquito net, and I was lucky not to encounter any mosquitoes. There was a hairdryer, kettle, and mini-fridge available.
I didn't miss having a TV, since I wasn't planning on watching much TV in Sri Lanka anyway. What was more of an issue was the WiFi, which didn't reach my room. It worked fine in the courtyard, but as soon as I went up to my room, it dropped. The equipment in the room wasn't in great working order, but after I reported the issue, everything started working properly.
The hotel grounds were surprisingly green and teeming with wildlife. I saw all sorts of creatures, including these adorable squirrels that seemed to be everywhere.
Breakfast was served on the patio with a stunning ocean view. The breakfast spread wasn't the most diverse, but everything I tried was delicious.
The restaurant offered a great value for money, with the option to grab a bite to eat and have dinner separately for a fee. The menu was in Russian.
The beach was super rocky, but the scenery was just breathtaking.
If you head left from the hotel, you'll end up on a beach where you can spot sea turtles. It's a great spot for some peace and quiet. When I stayed at the hotel in early November, it wasn't too busy either. The staff was super attentive and helpful, and any issues I had were resolved quickly. Not all staff members spoke Russian, but we managed to communicate just fine. Overall, my stay at this hotel was fantastic.
