Scarborough Fish & Chips: A Must-Visit in Tanjung Rhu for a Breathtaking Sunset

summarizeEditor's Summary

I stumbled upon Scarborough Fish & Chips while on vacation in Langkawi Island's northern part, and it's been a highlight of my trip. This casual eatery is a must-visit for a breathtaking sunset view and some seriously delicious fish and chips. Located conveniently next to the Nazrat Residence, it's a great spot to unwind after a day of exploring. What really sets Scarborough apart is its unique location and the fact that it's elevated about a meter from the ground, which makes for a fun and memorable dining experience. The waves from the beach hit the wall with such force that they reach the tables during high tide, adding to the cafe's charm. I highly recommend Scarborough Fish & Chips for its value for money, ease of use, and of course, its stunning sunset views.

We were on vacation on Langkawi Island's northern part, and we were surprised to find fewer cafes compared to the southern side. So, we ended up choosing this one, which was conveniently located next to our hotel, the Nazrat Residence.

I'm sharing my review of Scarborough Fish & Chips - Tanjung Rhu today.

Everyone heads to the cafe from the beach side, and it doesn't look very appealing at first glance. The cafe is elevated about a meter from the ground because during high tide, the waves from the beach hit the wall with such force that they reach the tables.

Interior.
The cafe's interior is essentially a roof held up by pillars.
Under the roof, there are plenty of tables for different group sizes.
Where to dine on the northern part of Langkawi - review
But we decided to head down to the lower level and sit at the tables right by the beach.
The views from these small spots are simply stunning - you can see the ocean in all its glory.

And it's the three islands in the distance that make Tanjung Rhu Beach so recognizable.
Many people grabbed a drink and headed down to the beach chairs, which belong to this cafe, to take in the sunset.
Menu.
The menu is presented in a book format with pictures.
They have a selection of cocktails.
There's beer, wine, and even hard liquor - a rare find in a cafe on an island.
We've got a pretty limited selection of freshly squeezed juices. They also serve tea and coffee.
Breakfast is an option here at the cafe, but it's actually cheaper at our hotel. You get an omelette, some fruit, and it's a steal for 400 rubles.
They've got a variety of fish dishes on the menu, prepared in different ways.
Chicken is also on the menu, mostly in the form of schnitzel.
They've got pizza and desserts like ice cream.
Our order.
My husband's been hooked on Corona beer since our trip to Qatar. They serve it the same way here - a small lime wedge is left in the bottle, and you drink it with that tangy flavor.
My kid and I went for the cola and Ice lemon tea.
The tea presentation isn't the prettiest in that cup, but it's the only option.
The utensils were served in a separate container.
We chose Prawn Frittes as our starter.
These are prawns fried in a batter. There was too much batter, which made it feel like I was eating a prawn-filled pastry. The sauce they served with it was similar to our '1000 islands' sauce.
The sauce was the only thing that saved it from the thick layer of batter.
Another dish we fell in love with in Malaysia is the Chicken Satay.
I have to say, these skewers were probably the smallest I've ever had. You could tell they were a bit stingy with the meat, but it was still super tasty. They came with a peanut sauce that's made from peanut paste mixed with coconut milk, lime juice, and spices.
My kid discovered a new favorite dish in Malaysia - Fish & Chips. He's been asking me why I never ordered it before.
Where to eat on Tandjung Rhu and Black sand beach - review The fries were sweet and super tasty, cooked just right, not too dry. The fish was also delicious, soft and juicy. We devoured the whole dish in no time, and even the sauce wasn't needed.
We also ordered the Chicken Schnitzel with Fries.
When they brought out the sauce, it came in a tiny cup, which I guess was for the fries. But it was so good that we decided to eat it without the sauce, and instead poured it all over the schnitzel.
The schnitzel had a great flavor, nice and meaty with a distinctive seasoning that made it really interesting. The meat in the schnitzel was tender and soft.

First Impressions.
We did what the Chinese do best: we ordered a bunch of dishes and everyone shared them like they were communal plates. We did the same.
I wasn't a fan of the thick breading on the prawns and the tiny satay skewers (they were the smallest I've seen in Malaysia). The other two dishes were a hit, though.
The total bill came out to be 202 ringgit (around 4040 rubles) including service.
To be honest, it's a bit pricey for the island. At the Yasmin cafe, where we had massive meat portions that we couldn't even finish, our bill was 203 ringgit.
I guess it's because this cafe is one of the few that's open in the evening, so they can charge more.
And of course, the view is stunning.
When the sun dipped behind the mountains, everyone from the cafe spilled out onto the beach to take in the view.
The waitstaff were friendly, and the food arrived quickly.
But our table kept wobbling, so we asked them to do something about it. Unfortunately, they weren't able to help us out, so we ended up propping it up with napkins and adjusting the leg to prevent spills.
