I'm still buzzing from my recent trip to Belarus, where I had the chance to explore some incredible attractions. One of the highlights of my journey was a visit to the Ruzhansky Palace Complex in Ruzhany, a town in the Brest region that's steeped in history and natural beauty.

The Ruzhansky Palace Complex is an architectural treasure that's been owned by several powerful families over the centuries, including the Sapieha dynasty. For centuries, this stunning ensemble was known as the Belarusian Versailles.

As you can see from my photos, the complex is currently undergoing a partial facelift, with some parts of the building being restored and reinforced. This process is slow, given that it's funded by the state.

But, I have to say, the complex looks stunning in its current state, with the restored parts blending in beautifully with the rest of the ensemble.

There are a few different legends about how the settlement got its name.

One story goes that the local lord gave the new settlement the names of his favorite daughters, Ruzh (Rose) and Anna. Since the girls were twins who looked identical, their names merged into one, and the place became known as Ruzhany.

The town of Ruzhany is located in the Brest region, and it's mentioned in written sources as far back as the 15th century.

Initially, the complex belonged to the Tyszkiewicz family, who were known for producing carpets, decorative belts, fabric, and ceramic items, and they even held markets.

It's known that the famous magnate, Chancellor Lew Sapieha, purchased this estate, and under his orders, a grand construction project began in the early 17th century.

As a result, a castle with three towers appeared in Ruzhany, combining the features of a defensive fortress and a ceremonial palace.

Later, the estate became a hub for resolving state issues, and it even hosted receptions for famous guests.

The castle's basement stored documents, the state treasury, and the Sapieha family's archives, as well as food supplies and wine in barrels.

In the 17th century, the palace was looted and partially destroyed, likely due to a combination of internal conflicts and the Northern War.

The owner of Ruzhany, Alexander Sapieha, rebuilt his residence, and the castle became even more beautiful, transforming into a refined palace with gardens and parks on its grounds.

I was blown away by the castle's unique blend of classical and baroque styles - it's almost as stunning as Versailles. The library and art gallery were particular highlights, and the theatre was a real showstopper.

Fast forward to 1831, when the Ruzhany estate was seized after a rebellion. And then, of course, there were the two World Wars, which left the complex in ruins once again. Thankfully, the main and eastern wings survived.

In the summer of 2008, restoration work began on the old Sapeha residence.

First up, they renovated the central entrance gates - the Brama. They also restored the eastern and western wings.

By 2011, the Ruzhany Palace complex had been transformed into a museum, where we got to see authentic artifacts and period interiors.

We took a guided tour of the wings, and it was fascinating to learn about the complex's chequered history - how many times it's been destroyed and rebuilt, and what's still to come in terms of restoration.

In the eastern wing, you'll find galleries dedicated to the history of the Sapeha dynasty, as well as the castle's and palace's periods.

I'm not going to go into too much detail, but I'll share the photos I took.

I was blown away by the progress they've made on the eastern palace wing since 2019. The restoration work is truly impressive.

Did you know that back in the 18th century, during the Sapieha era, this very palace hosted a riding school and a theater? It's mind-boggling to think that the theater troupe had 60 artists and dancers, along with a music school, chapel, and orchestra of 40 musicians. The palace stage had 7 plans of backdrops, allowing for a quick change of scenery three times during a performance.

Once the restoration is complete, the ground floor of the eastern wing will be home to a multipurpose theater, a mini-hotel, and a café. The second floor will feature an exhibition gallery and a storage facility.The tour took around an hour to complete, and I'm so glad I didn't miss it. We were lucky with the weather, and it made exploring the entire complex a breeze.

I highly recommend visiting this fascinating place and immersing yourself in its rich history. Seeing it all firsthand is truly an experience you won't forget.
