Discovering a Hidden Gem in Smolensk's Historic Center: Russian Yard Cafe
I stumbled upon a charming cafe in the heart of Smolensk's historic center - the Russian Yard, affectionately known as Russian Dvor to locals.
Located on October Revolution Street, this enchanting cafe is a must-visit attraction in Smolensk for tourists and locals alike.
The cafe's unique features include its whimsical pagoda, straight out of a fairytale, and a beautiful glass dome on the cafe's grounds, perfect for a romantic dinner or a family gathering.
Amidst the trees and walking paths, you'll find a charming atmosphere that's perfect for relaxation and recreation.
The cafe has a small, enchanted forest area that's perfect for both kids and adults to explore - and the best part? It's completely free to enter!
They've set up various attractions that are fun for all seasons - a mini rollercoaster, playhouses, and a log swing - so you can enjoy them whenever you visit.
When I'm with the kids, I love bringing them to this park near the cafe - it's got interactive sculptures and my little one even got to go inside the ice house and visit the bear.
One of the highlights of the cafe is its menu, which features mostly traditional Eastern Slavic dishes - blini, lapsha, draniki, and fish cutlets.
The dishes are reasonably priced, averaging around 200-300 rubles per serving.
We placed our order and grabbed a table. Despite the long line, there were plenty of tables available since many people were ordering takeout.
The cafe has two floors, and I'd never sat upstairs before, so I was excited to climb up the cool, spiral staircase.
Next to the staircase, they had a tiny goldfish fountain where kids were playing and trying to catch the water flowing from wooden bowls.
On the second floor, it's just as colorful and lively, with high ceilings that make it feel like a fairytale.
I wasn't planning on ordering a lot since we had a dinner reservation, but I just couldn't resist the signature blini - they're still just as delicious after 20 years, and I was craving them so badly!
We also ordered a strawberry tea, but for some reason, one was hot and the other was room temperature.
I've never been to Smolensk, but I'd highly recommend trying the draniki (potato pancakes) and lapunas (something like a cheesecake, with different fillings) at this cafe - they're simple, but traditional dishes for the local population.
This cafe, Russian House, is a lovely spot with reasonable prices, interesting interiors, and unique dishes.
It's located right in the heart of the city, so be sure to pop in during your stroll around town.
I'd also highly recommend visiting the museum in the actual fortress wall, it's literally a 2-minute walk from the cafe.
The cafe's grounds are super pretty and well-maintained - they even clear the snow, even though the outdoor areas weren't open during the winter.
The cafe has been around since 2005, and I don't think they've changed the design - it's always been bright, colorful, and decorated with Russian fairy tale themes.
And I love that they've got all the stories together in one place.
I still remember running here after classes as a student to grab my favorite blini with cheese and onion.
The moment I thought about them, I craved that taste all over again, even though we were planning to go somewhere else entirely.
This restaurant is a MUST-VISIT in Smolensk – you can't miss it! The signature elk dish for dessert and the ICE-BAR for the brave ones are a must-try.
Upon entering the cafe, I noticed they'd added self-service terminals, but they weren't working during our visit.
We had to join the queue at the cash register, which started almost right at the entrance, but we didn't have to wait too long – maybe around 10-15 minutes.
During that time, I managed to dash to the restroom, because, let's face it, Smolensk often struggles with this issue, even during public holidays.
They usually set up 1-2 stalls, which you have to wait in line for up to an hour.
So, cafes like this one in the city center are a real lifesaver in this regard.
and now you know where to go when nature calls – nobody judges you
The menu features mostly traditional Eastern Slavic dishes – blini, lapsha, draniki, and fish cutlets.
The dishes are reasonably priced, averaging around 200-300 rubles per serving.
