The Unlikely Heroine of 'Tough Lady': A Refreshing Take on the Strong Woman Trope

summarizeEditor's Summary

I recently stumbled upon a movie that's all about a guy who finds himself in a world without internet or phones - talk about a fish out of water! The movie's unique blend of humor and heart really won me over. Kae In's performance was top-notch, and the supporting cast added to the movie's charm. If you're looking for a movie that'll make you laugh and cry, this hidden gem is a must-watch.

I recently stumbled upon a movie that's all about a guy who finds himself in a world without internet or phones - talk about a fish out of water! The movie was brought to my attention by Kae In, an actress who's got a knack for playing tough guys in fragile roles.
The eldest daughter-in-law from the family of officials is a bit of a straightforward but stubborn person. My niece loves playing with this thing, but she's always getting into trouble. She convinces her cousin to show her how to use it, but when things go wrong, she's the one who has to deal with the consequences.
I've managed to get inside the household of the not-so-favorite 4 ladies, each of whom has their own unique quirks. The heroine is pretty unpopular and they'd love to get rid of her in any way possible.
My niece is a quick learner, though - she figured out how to use this thing in no time, and even uncovered some of the hidden features and shortcuts. I have to admit, our little hero isn't exactly thrilled about getting tangled up in all these plot twists.
I needed a jade bracelet that would only pass down to the rightful heir and the matriarch of the family, so I could get into her world. She even uncovered some discrepancies in the field reports, sorted out some issues with the management, started making her own wine, and even hosted a contest for the most sober person.
My sister-in-law's daughter, who's a shopkeeper, wasn't too thrilled about the main character getting her hands dirty, so she started inserting sticks in the wheels. But that's not all - our protagonist's got a knack for finding trouble, and she's not about to let her rival get the best of her.
She even went as far as to protect her own maid from an unfair marriage. I have to say, I wasn't expecting to see the hero get into a situation like this in the third wife's family. He wasn't exactly fighting, but he was definitely in the wrong place at the wrong time, and he saw something he shouldn't have.
But then, with his head held high, he stood up for the third wife and helped her clear her name, all because the main heroine and the fourth lord wanted to make things right and prevent an innocent girl from getting hurt because of her relationship with her sister, the emperor's favorite.
The project seems to be leaning into the feminist wave. The heroine is all about empowering women and helping them out. She even went as far as to protect her own maid from an unfair marriage.
I've gotta say, the hero starts to feel responsible for the whole female side of the family, even though the main character is a pretty delicate girl. As for the male characters, they're pretty average and only there to fill the roles.
The main hero is definitely handsome and smart. You can't help but be impressed by your own wife's sassiness.
While this couple is pretty harmonious, there's no over-the-top romance - they're more like two friends working together to solve problems. The storyline is pretty solid, too. It's not the worst take on the 'strong woman saves the day' trope.
Decorations, locations, pavilions, and costumes are all at a pretty high level. There aren't any garish colors in the clothing, and the fake love interests aren't laughable.
One thing that's missing is a bit of romance, which is understandable since the protagonist is a pop idol who doesn't really care if he's liked by his partner or not. Can he really let go of everyone he's attached to?
