A Hidden Gem Among Budget Radios - Don't Overlook the Quansheng UV-5R Plus!

summarizeEditor's Summary

I've been using the Quansheng UV-5R Plus for a while now, and I'm seriously impressed with its performance. At first glance, this radio might seem like just another budget option, but trust me, it's worth a closer look. Released around the same time as the Quansheng K5(8), the UV-5R Plus often gets lost in the shadows. However, it's a radio that deserves attention, especially considering its value for money. I bought mine on Ozone last summer, and I've been using it non-stop since then. I've been putting it through its paces, and I'm happy to report that it's held up remarkably well. The build quality is surprisingly solid, with buttons that feel substantial and a battery that lasts longer than expected. I've been using it for both transmitting and receiving, and the frequency range is impressive, covering 136-174 MHz (VHF) and 400-470 MHz (UHF) for transmission, and 108-135.975 MHz and 350-399.975 MHz for reception. The Li-Ion 2200 mAh 7.2V 2x18650 battery provides a decent amount of power for its size, and the 200 channels are a great feature, allowing for plenty of customization and flexibility. The price is very reasonable, especially considering the features and performance you get.

A Hidden Gem Among Budget Radios - Don't Overlook the Quansheng UV-5R Plus!
The price has gone up a bit, but I think it's still worth it.
Important - my review is about the 5R Plus, and I'm not sure if the new 5R Plus v2.0 is an improvement. Although, if you're experienced, you'll figure it out, and if not, I wouldn't recommend messing with it.
Main Features:
Transmitter power: up to 5W, with three levels of adjustment.Frequency range: 136-174 MHz (VHF) and 400-470 MHz (UHF) for transmission, and 108-135.975 MHz and 350-399.975 MHz for reception.Battery: Li-Ion 2200 mAh 7.2V 2x18650Channels: 200Display: LCD display with backlight, showing two frequencies (A and B).Other features: built-in flashlight, FM radio, NOAA weather display, scrambler function, microphone gain adjustment (MIC GAIN).Kit: radio, charger, battery, antenna, clip, lanyard.I've been using the UV-5R Plus for a week, and the build quality has impressed me. The buttons feel solid, and the battery lasts longer than I expected.
No Type-C port means no restrictions on settings for me - no v2.0 issues here!
The top section has the antenna connector, LED light, and volume control.
The charger is a bit weak - it's only 0.5A, which isn't enough for two 18650 batteries connected in series. I'd recommend a minimum of 1A for this setup.
I might take it apart later to see what's inside - but as it stands, it's not exactly a powerhouse.
The Keyboard Isn't Basic:
It's got hotkeys - like F.
Press F + ***, for example F+0(FM), and the radio turns on - and so on.
The Verdict:
It's cheaper than other similar radios. The battery's got two 18650 cells inside. This design gives better efficiency than the flat 'coin cell' type, and it's got plenty of capacity. The looks are no longer toy-like, but not quite professional either - it's got a civilian vibe. The accessory pack includes an 17cm antenna. Most sets usually come with half that length, which affects reception and transmission - trust me, I've tried it.It's got tons of features - I'm still figuring them all out. There's FM radio. There's a hidden menu option. The body's held together without screws. You can remove the antenna, take off the volume dial, and separate the two halves of the case. The body's made of plastic on top, metal in the middle, and plastic at the back. The assembled unit is sturdy, with some redundancy for reliability.
If you're after a budget-friendly radio that's not too flashy, but still packs a punch, this might be the one for you.
Recommended.
PS - Before you go out and buy a radio, I strongly advise you to read up on call signs, radio etiquette, and join some relevant forums. Most importantly, memorize the frequencies that are open to civilians in your area, and be aware of the ones that might get you fined or worse. There are plenty of resources available online.
