A Mixed Bag of Nostalgia and Disappointment: Was the New Prostokvashino Movie Worth the Money?

summarizeEditor's Summary

I took my 8-year-old son to the cinema to watch Prostokvashino, a childhood favorite that's been reimagined for the big screen. While the new movie's storyline is pretty similar to the original, it's not without its flaws. The cast is star-studded, but the dialogue often feels flat. The movie's atmosphere and visuals are spot on, but the humor falls flat at times. I'd say it's worth every penny for nostalgic value, but not necessarily for its innovation or originality. If you're a fan of the original, you'll likely enjoy the new movie, but it's not a game changer. The movie's runtime is around 90 minutes, which is a standard length for most animated films. Overall, it's a fun and engaging movie that's sure to delight both kids and adults, but it's not without its flaws.

A Mixed Bag of Nostalgia and Disappointment: Was the New Prostokvashino Movie Worth the Money?
Hey there! I took my 8-year-old son out for a movie night during the long winter break, and we were wondering how to keep him entertained. One of the ideas we had was to hit the cinema. We ended up choosing a film called Prostokvashino after watching some trailers for movies currently in theaters. My son picked it, and now that we've seen it, I wanted to share more about the film and my thoughts on it.
Prostokvashino - A Childhood Favorite
I've lost count of how many times I watched this movie as a kid, and I still remember every moment on repeat. The catchphrases are etched in my memory forever. So, when my son chose this movie, I was excited to watch it again. Plus, the new movie's storyline is pretty similar to the original.
The movie was developed by TNT, Soyuzmultfilm, and Gazprom Media Holding - a company I'd never heard of before. Director Suren Balasanyan brought this new version to life.
The cast is pretty star-studded, with many familiar faces.

What I Liked About the New Prostokvashino Movie
Idea. I love the idea behind this – modern adaptations of classic Soviet cartoons or folk tales. It's a trend I'm really into, and I'm glad to see it happening. My son didn't grow up watching the original cartoon, but he's learned all the characters by heart thanks to the animated series. And now, thanks to the movie, he's even more familiar with the world of Prostokvashino.
Storyline. The creators didn't try to come up with something new – the movie's storyline is almost identical to the original cartoon. I loved that they stuck to the classic tale. It would have been jarring if Uncle Kuzma was some modern, tech-obsessed character, or if he used slang and modern references. That would have been a disservice to the original story.
Set Design. The set design is also very much in line with the original cartoon. The movie takes place in the Soviet era, and the attention to detail is impressive.
There's the old apartment with the blue car inside that we all remember.
And the old bus that takes you to Prostokvashino.
Soundtrack. The soundtrack, which features the iconic music from the Prostokvashino cartoon, is a big part of the film's atmosphere. Other classic Soviet songs are also included, and I think the selection is spot on.
Animated Characters. I know some people might not like the cat Matroskin, Shari, bird Hvatayka, and cow Murka with her calf. But I'm the opposite – I love them. I think it's great they were made to look like the classic characters. If they looked different, it would've ruined the effect. And overall, the animation is pretty good. All the characters look alive and interesting.
What I Didn't Like About the New Prostokvashino Movie
Lack of Dynamics. As I mentioned earlier, the new film is almost a direct copy of the animated version. I knew exactly what was going to happen from the start, and it was a bit boring to watch. There was nothing to keep me engaged or wondering what would happen next. The familiar lines, scenarios, and story made it feel like I'd seen it all before. That's why it was a bit of a drag to watch.
It's starting to feel like the same old story. I think it would've been awesome to add something new to the classic. They could've left it as is, but added a plot twist or a story. That way, it might've been more interesting. As it stands, the only new thing is the Sochi setting.
The humor fell flat for me. I only laughed a couple of times throughout the entire movie. I was hoping for something more lively and funnier. After all, it's a kid's movie! A few more laughs wouldn't have hurt.
My Take on the New Prostokvashino Movie
At the beginning, the audience in the theater was engaged, but by the end, people were openly yawning. Kids were getting up and adults were checking their watches.
Personally, I liked the movie's atmosphere, decorations, soundtrack, and characters. However, I think it lacked real emotions, dynamics, and something new. If it had, it might've been a pretty good movie. As it stands, I didn't enjoy it much. But my 8-year-old son loved it. I think that's largely because of the animated characters and the fact that he hadn't seen the Soviet version of the movie.
I've gotta be honest, the new Prostokvashino movie isn't one I'd recommend. I don't regret taking the kids to see it, but if I had a choice, I'd have picked something else. The 450 rubles I spent on tickets isn't a total loss, since the little one enjoyed the movie. I'm giving it 3 stars myself, but I wouldn't suggest watching it.
