A Thrilling Ride That Fell Short of My Expectations

summarizeEditor's Summary

I dove into 'Perelomy' by Frank Tilie, a thriller that promised to keep me on the edge of my seat. The premise hooked me from the start - a social worker uncovers a web of secrets and lies surrounding a catatonic man and a patient named Alice Dehan. But unfortunately, the book didn't quite deliver on its promise. The non-linear narrative had me scratching my head, and the graphic content was disturbing. I was expecting a gripping, twisty story, but 'Perelomy' fell short in some key areas. The book's flaws left me feeling underwhelmed, despite its promising start and engaging writing style. I'm a fan of Tilie's work, so it's disappointing to say that 'Perelomy' didn't quite live up to my expectations.

A Thrilling Ride That Fell Short of My Expectations
I'm always on the lookout for a good thriller or mystery to get my mind racing, and this spring I stumbled upon 'Perelomy' by Frank Tilie. The book's premise had me hooked, but unfortunately, it didn't quite live up to my expectations.
What's the book about?
When social worker Julie Rocval finds a catatonic man on a bus stop, she uncovers a web of secrets and lies that lead her to a patient named Alice Dehan. But what connects these two women, and what dark truth lies behind Alice's mysterious past?
My Take on the Book
I'm a fan of Frank Tilie's work, and I was expecting a gripping, twisty thriller with a complex plot. While 'Perelomy' delivers on some fronts, it fell short for me in others.
For one thing, the book is graphic and disturbing, with plenty of violence, torture, and unsavory characters. I'm not easily shocked, but I found myself squirming in my seat at times. The non-linear narrative is another issue – it's like trying to untangle a knot, and I found myself getting lost in the sheer number of plot threads.
I was expecting more surprises and plot twists, but as it turned out, the killer's identity was pretty obvious from the start. I mean, come on, it's the butler – that's a total giveaway.
What Didn't Work for Me
I struggled to get into the book at first, mainly because the beginning is a slow burn. It takes a while to understand the connections between the characters and the events, and it's hard to stay invested. I'm all for a good mystery, but this one had me scratching my head for a good chunk of the book.
Tilie's writing style is non-linear, which can be a great way to build tension and suspense. However, in this case, it felt more like a headache. The story jumps back and forth in time without warning, making it hard to follow.
And then there's the killer's identity. I'm not gonna lie, it was pretty obvious from the start. I mean, come on, it's the butler! That's just too easy.
The Pros and Cons
My Verdict
Don't get me wrong, 'Perelomy' has its moments. The writing is engaging, and the plot is full of unexpected twists and turns. But for me, it was a letdown. I was expecting more surprises, more tension, and more surprises. Unfortunately, it didn't quite deliver.
Still, if you're a fan of Frank Tilie's work or just looking for a good mystery to get your teeth into, you might enjoy 'Perelomy'. Just don't say I didn't warn you!
