I've been a fan of Peppa Pig since my teenage years, but now that I'm a mom, I see how much nonsense they're feeding kids. As a parent, it's disheartening to see how this show portrays family dynamics.
Let's start with the animation - it's super basic, like something a toddler would do. But honestly, I think it's not an attempt to be kid-friendly, but rather a degradation of artistic standards. The way they draw faces is just plain weird. I've noticed this before in shows like 'Mickey Mouse Clubhouse'. I guess it's just a trend.
And don't even get me started on the color palette – it's a total eye-sore. The colors are unnatural and way too bright. Sometimes the show breaks the laws of physics, like when George's tears just float upwards. I mean, I've seen similar stuff in 'The Lion King', but that was a deliberate joke. Here, it's just a thing they do.
Characters.
Grandpa Pig is the most lovable character, but his family just loves to mock him and make him feel bad. And then he just laughs along with them. I get that laughing at yourself can be a good thing, but you need to know when to draw the line and protect yourself.
Mommy Pig isn't exactly a standout character – she's just a mom, you know? But she's got a serious problem: she puts her kids above her husband, setting a terrible example. Sometimes she's just a classic 'momzilla,' always putting her kids first without even asking their dad's opinion.
Penelope Pig is the main character, and honestly, she's a real piece of work. She's got no respect for anyone, loves to bully her dad, and isn't above calling her little brother stupid. She's also super selfish.
George Pig is probably the most questionable character in the show. He's got some obvious developmental issues – maybe even autism – but it's never addressed. Most of the time he just says 'dinosaur', but if you watch enough episodes, you realize he can actually talk. He's just not interested. And let me tell you, he throws a tantrum at the drop of a hat, is super spoiled, and is the only one in the family who seems to get along with dad.
Miss Rabbit is a weird one – she's a bus driver, an ice cream vendor, a traffic cop, a cashier... it's like the artists just didn't want to put in the effort to create different characters.
The Family – like, the dad has a brother, and his wife and daughter are carbon copies of the dad's family, just in different colors. It's like nobody wanted to put in the work to create actual characters.
I don't see the point in describing the other characters.
Bullying the dad.
The main theme of this show is bullying the dad. It's like they're trying to teach kids that it's okay to mock and belittle their parents.
I've gotta say, one episode that really stood out to me was when the family went on a beach vacation. George and Peppa buried their dad in the sand, and he asked Peppa to get him a hat to keep the sun off. But instead of telling him off, Peppa just bossed him around, saying 'Please, Daddy.'
Then, their dad fell asleep in the sand, and later their mom told them it was time to leave. They packed up their stuff, but they were convinced they'd left something behind. It wasn't until George remembered their dad that they realized they'd almost left him behind. Peppa just said, 'Oh, Daddy, we almost forgot about you!'
I mean, their dad is basically just a towel to them.
And in the end, they all just collapse on the ground and laugh. But it's not really that funny.
There's another episode where their dad doesn't have enough room in the tent, so his family kicks him out onto the street.
But what really got my goat was the episode where George was too scared to go down the slide, so their dad went with him. But then he got stuck.
I've seen some pretty wild scenes in this show, but nothing beats the time Peppa and her friends knocked me off a hill with their combined weight. My dad took a nasty spill onto his back, and the kids started jumping on his stomach, laughing hysterically. It was clear he was in pain, but they just kept going. Finally, everyone ended up laughing, including my dad – the ultimate masochist.
There are plenty of episodes like this. What's a kid supposed to learn from this? The complete disregard for authority, the undermining of the father's role in the family.
It's like the creators of this show hate men or are just really bitter towards their dads.
Complete nonsense.
The content of most episodes is ridiculously simplistic and doesn't teach kids anything – it just leads to degradation. Every episode ends with the family tumbling to the ground and laughing, even when it's not funny. It's like they're trying to inculcate a love of messiness.
I get that the show features pigs, but the emphasis on filth is just bizarre. Pigs are actually pretty clean animals, and they only get dirty when they're trying to get rid of parasites.
Encouraging entitlement and spoiled behavior.
The kids in this show are ridiculously spoiled. They get away with everything. They're selfish and entitled.
Any tantrum they throw is immediately indulged by their parents.
What message does that send to kids? That they're entitled to whatever they want, and they'll never face consequences for their actions.
Animal cruelty.
I have to say, I was a bit taken aback by the scene where Peppa and George found a spider. At first, they were terrified, but once they got over their fear, they started playing with it, putting it to bed in a toy house, shaking it like a toy, and generally making the spider's life pretty miserable.
The Verdict.
I've got to be honest, this show is a bit of a brain-twister with a pretty questionable message. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who values good parenting and respectful relationships between family members.
