My oldest son is absolutely obsessed with building all sorts of constructors, so when it was his birthday, I didn't hesitate to buy him another one - a glowing magnetic 3D constructor. The number of parts determines the price, and I decided 110 would be enough because, let's be real, I don't want to spend my day picking up tiny pieces from the floor.
General Info
Magnetic Glowing Constructor
Brand: Pelican Happy Toys
Number of parts: 110
Material: ABS plastic
Age restriction: 3+
Country of origin: China
Price: 1780 rubles
Purchased from: Ozon
Packaging
The constructor comes in a sturdy box with handles. At first, we stored it there until the box finally met its demise.
The front of the box features the most complex build, but we managed to tackle it.
The back of the box lists the total number of parts and how many of each type, as well as a few magnetic assembly variations. Inside, there's also an instruction manual with a bunch of different build options.
Parts
I liked that all the tiny parts were packaged separately. After playtime, my son would neatly collect them, making it easier to find the right piece next time.
The magnets are seriously heavy and sturdy. They're the most abundant component in the whole package, and they come in two varieties. Some serve as connectors, while the blue ones act as supports during assembly. Oh, and the seller threw in a little bonus - a Stich sticker.
The plastic ramps and curves come in two colors - blue and orange.
The caps are all the same pentagonal shape. They only fit the blue magnets.
The glowing elements include caps, lamps, flashlights, and balls. The balls come in both regular and glow-in-the-dark versions.
There were also these stickers, but the kids just slapped them on the fridge.
Quality and Safety Measures
As for quality, it's a bit of a mixed bag. The glowing components really let me down. The batteries in them died within 3-4 days. The glow-in-the-dark balls lasted a bit longer, but they'd shatter into two pieces if you dropped them, and the internal mechanism with the light would come flying out. That's super hazardous, especially if you have toddlers who love to put everything in their mouths. At least the balls themselves are large enough to be out of reach for little ones.
I was pleasantly surprised by how sturdy the plastic parts were, despite looking flimsy at first. They only started to show signs of wear and tear after about three months, when the kid lost interest and could accidentally walk all over it.
The magnets are incredibly strong and virtually indestructible – you could even use them as a weapon! They're heavy and pointed at the edges, so be careful not to let your kid combine too many at once. I'd recommend this toy for kids a bit older, who can handle it without trying to use it as a projectile.
As for the magnets themselves, the quality is top-notch, and the best part is that they don't lose their magnetic properties over time. I've had another magnetic constructor that was a total letdown – the magnets would only hold together occasionally.
My Experience with It
At first, my kid was completely clueless and just happy to have me build things for him. But after two months, he was able to put the pieces together on his own (and even I had to exert some effort to get them to stick), and he started to get creative, building all sorts of structures, from labyrinths to castles and houses.
One thing that's worth mentioning about this constructor is that it's got its downsides too. The magnets are way too slippery. I found myself constantly rebuilding the structure because it would collapse the moment I'd nudge it, and the magnets would slide right off. I had to build it on a kid's mat to keep it stable.
What skills does it develop?
This constructor is a real brain-stormer for kids. My son's been building all sorts of crazy things with it - labyrinths, beakers for experiments, space stations, ships, and roller coasters. I've lost count of how many things he's built. At first, he was just playing with it, but even my husband enjoyed building towers with him.
This toy really held my son's attention for several days straight. He forgot all about cartoons and gadgets. It's not every day you see our kid so engrossed in a single game. He even developed some patience and creativity.
Verdict
I think this constructor would make an awesome gift for boys aged 3-4. It's got them hooked for hours, develops focus, imagination, and fine motor skills. Yeah, it's got a few minor drawbacks, but the pros far outweigh the cons. We bought it back in August, and our son still can't get enough of it - he asks to play with it all the time.
This constructor is a solid investment for any kid. Most toys are just a waste of money, but this one's different. It's got real staying power, and it's not just the kids who'll enjoy it - even adults will find themselves getting drawn in.
