A Decent Choice for Pampers Fans - But Not a Game-Changer
I'll admit it, I was hesitant to try Pampers again after their Little Monkeys design diapers were a major letdown. But those adorable baby fingers in the ads on the Detsky Mir website won me over. The ad is seriously cute, and I haven't slept since the middle of my pregnancy, let's just say. So, I tossed a pack of these diapers into my cart on a whim.
Design-wise, it's pretty standard. There's a handle on top, and it's super easy to carry.
The perforation's not on the top flap, but on the opposite side of the package - on the 'side' of the packaging. It opened easily, and I didn't need scissors. The hole's big enough so you can pull out a diaper quickly and easily. I have a pack sitting on my window, and I use one diaper a day, at night, just like the manufacturer says, so there's no point storing them in a closet.
The packaging's got all the necessary info - from the manufacturing location to how to put on and dispose of the diapers for those who've never used them before. I don't see the point in pointing it out - it's all visible in the photos.
The diapers come in two designs: a sleeping bear on the moon and a rocket blasting off from a cloud. I figure it's because different sizes have different designs, because the designs on the packaging don't match the ones inside the pack. Doesn't bother me.
Two design options The diaper's got a Velcro strip that goes around, and a moisture indicator. The Velcro's pretty soft, sits well on the baby, and doesn't dig into their belly - BUT (!) my diapers are bigger than they should be for an 8-kilo baby. I've got to say, the whole issue with sizing is pretty classic. That's when you see all our imperfections, which are pretty normal at this stage. The only size that fits my 6-11 kg kid is Joonies, and they still look pretty roomy on her. The other three pairs in size 4 (for 9-14 kg) are just about to fit my pretty petite daughter. I reckon I'll need to upgrade to the next size around 10-11 kg. The back of the nappies has this disposal tape. It doesn't come unstuck like some nappies I've tried, but it does a decent job of holding the soiled nappy in place without unraveling. I took a chance and bought the size 4 nappies for my 9-15 kg kid, although my daughter is still a bit under 9 kg (8 kg 72 cm tall, she's pretty petite and long). But we're aiming for 9 kg, and I'm glad I did. It cost me 599 rubles for 30 nappies, so that's 20 rubles per night. My kid sleeps pretty steadily for 8-10 hours at night. Considering she doesn't fall asleep immediately after putting on the nappy, and I don't take it off as soon as she wakes up, she often spends 11-12 hours in the 'night' nappy. Although usually it's around 10 hours in total. I've stopped changing her at night to avoid waking her up, unless she wakes up on her own or has an accident, which hasn't happened at night yet. I was pleasantly surprised by how thin the nappies are, but it did make me wonder if they'd hold up
Nights are the worst. I thought the absorbency was lacking, especially considering my previous experiences with other brands' diapers and their own pants. They'd leak at the legs, or the back, or just seem damp on the outside, even when the kid wasn't wetting them. To my surprise, the manufacturer has finally got it right. At least, the first batch I got was decent quality, but I'm not sure if future batches will be the same.
I'll get back to the absorbent core. It looks suspiciously similar to what I've seen in those failed diaper designs. What do you think - could it be the same thing, just improved here? If so, it seems to be working better. Here's a clean, new diaper with the absorbent core visible from both the front and back.
The pants don't leak even when they're completely soaked, although they do get translucent and show just how much liquid is inside. Here's a picture of them after a full night's use. In my opinion, even when they're fully loaded, they still fit pretty well. The kid doesn't seem to experience any discomfort, and there's no huge bulge between the legs. They rip along the seam really well. It's perfect, if you ask me. Easy to tear, but not so easy that they'll rip apart on their own or when putting them on the kid. They don't stretch out like those other diaper designs did.
I love the classic double elastic waistband in this diaper. It fits snugly without letting my kid's undies leak, but it doesn't pinch their legs or ride up even when they're tossing and turning at night. My little one doesn't kick their legs up to the ceiling when they're sleeping because they're just too far away.
Aside from Pampers Nighttime Diapers, we've been using Huggies 'Soft as a Cloud' Universal for boys and girls, Huggies 'Soft as a Cloud' for girls, Joonies Comfort, and I have to say, I'm really impressed with Pampers. For the first time ever, I thought they might just surprise me. But not by being cheap, guys, not by being cheap...
To be honest, these 'Nighttime Diapers' are virtually identical to Huggies 'Soft as a Cloud' (by the way, the only difference between the 'universal' and 'girls' versions is the design and placement of the extra-absorbent insert – go for the universals, they're cheaper). But Huggies are 5 rubles cheaper per unit and not a single thing is worse, just a tad thicker, but I'm not sure if you'd even notice the difference in the middle of summer. Joonies Comfort is a notch below (I last bought them for 13.7 rubles per unit, and before that for 12.9 rubles per unit), but I love them dearly and in our case, our nighttime diapers were actually these Joonies before we switched to Pampers. So, we'll finish this pack and stick with our trusty Joonies and Haggies.
I'm finally satisfied with the quality, no questions asked. They fit my baby well and stay in place all night. They don't have any strong odors, don't cause any irritation or allergic reactions, or leave any red marks. In the case of the overnight diapers the manufacturer recommends, this feature is especially important. So, what's the verdict?
I don't have any major complaints about these diapers – they're actually pretty good. They're super thin, evenly filled, and can last a whole night without getting soggy on the outside, which is a major achievement for this brand. However, they're not exactly impressive, and they do run a bit small. They're also pretty pricey, even with a discount (they're 20 rubles a pop, and the Haggsis brand with similar features, but a bit thicker, are 5 rubles cheaper each).
I wasn't blown away, but I was pleasantly surprised, considering my previous experiences with Pampers were all disappointments. Overall, for fans of this brand, they're a good choice if you're willing to pay a premium for a familiar name – go for it if you're not, because there are plenty of alternatives that are just as good, if not better.
Now that I've had some time with them, I have to admit my initial impressions were way more positive than they are now. I'm not really complaining about anything specific, except for what I think is an overpriced tag. The size is a bit off, but if you buy a larger size, they're really comfortable, don't leave marks on your skin, and don't leak. They don't chafe, pinch, or get all bunched up. The absorbency is a bit lacking, but it's spread out evenly and it's just enough to get those claimed 12 hours of sleep. However, they don't stand out in any way from other brands' nighttime diapers that don't make that claim. To be honest, nighttime diapers aren't my favorite, but at least they're not the worst.
I know some users complain about a strong smell, but we haven't had that issue. That being said, I did experience a similar problem with another brand's diapers, and the manufacturer said it was just because they were super fresh. Leaving them out in the open for a few days and the smell went away. I'm not sure if it's the same with these, but it might be worth a try.
I'd say a solid four stars and a recommendation, but only for fans of the brand.
