We'd just arrived in Bangkok after a long flight, and were looking forward to a few days of rest and exploration. Our first stop was the MahaNakhon skyscraper, affectionately known as the Pixel building. We'd seen pictures of its unique design, but nothing could prepare us for the real thing.
Located near the Chong Nonsi BTS station, the building is hard to miss. You'll spot it easily, even if you're not looking for it.
The MahaNakhon skyscraper, or Pixel building, in all its glorySo, what is MahaNakhon? It's a multi-functional skyscraper that's home to a hotel, residential units, shops, and a restaurant. The rooftop features a bar and an observation deck with a glass floor. It's a pretty cool spot to take in the views of the city.
MahaNakhon stands at an impressive 314 meters tall, making it the second-tallest building in Thailand and the 69th in Asia. Its unique facade is made up of glass blocks that resemble pixels or Tetris blocks. The building's design is pretty clever, and it's definitely worth a visit.
We arrived at the entrance around 9:50, after leaving our hotel at 9:15. We were lucky to be among the first to arrive, both solo travelers and tour groups.
The BTS platform is visible in the backgroundAs we approached the building, we were stopped by a security guard who checked us with a handheld metal detector and looked through our bags. We later handed over our bags to a storage service and continued on our way.
Once we cleared security, we headed straight to the ticket counter. Behind us, we could hear the sound of the crowd building up...
I pulled out one of the passports, since the senior 60+ ticket is half the price! Billets in the ticket booths are available in all sorts of flavors and budgets: Tickets in all sorts of flavors and colors. We chose the left option... Happy with our purchased tickets I chose a senior 60+ ticket and a regular adult ticket. That cost us 1230 baht.
Tickets and receipt After going through security, we made our way to a special corridor, where the inverted Bangkok skyline was visible on the ceiling (although you can just ignore it - I didn't find it that impressive). As the crowd started to gather, we were the first to be ushered into the elevator. As we moved, the sound turned on and the walls transformed into screens displaying moving images of Bangkok and other cartoons: Interactive elevator We reached the 74th floor in just 30 seconds! If you compare it to the Baiyoke Sky (the first competitor of the "Pixel"), their elevator is way more interesting - the ascent begins in a dimly lit room, and then... one of the walls becomes glass. Anyone standing against the wall will definitely jump in surprise... or fear.
Lobby on the 74th floor Exiting the elevator, we found ourselves in a spacious lobby where you can not only take in the entire city on a 360-degree view, but also sit down, rest, and think... But who would do that when there are still four floors to go and the 78th floor has its own small glass elevator. And then it's just the sky, fresh air, and the entire city at your fingertips... Elevator that takes you directly to the roof Height marker If the weather cooperates (like it did for us), you can see a lot. Look, there's the Chao Phraya River in the distance (we had already taken a boat ride on it earlier in the day):
River Chao Phraya in the distance And here's the riverNow, the highlight of the trip - the glass floor. I know some guys freak out like kids when they see it. My wife, on the other hand, walked right up to it and started checking out the houses and cars way down below. The city is literally at your feet... It's pretty cool standing over the cityWe got there early, and the transparency of the atmosphere for Bangkok at that time was pretty normal. Before heading out onto the glass floor, you have to hand over all your belongings to the security (even your phone) and put on these silly socks.
You'll need these silly socks (even if you're barefoot) And what are those little creatures running around down there?... City views...After spending some time on the high floor, we decided to celebrate with a drink. And we marked our visit to the skyscraper :-)We also took a stroll around the rooftop.
It's always more interesting standing at the edgeAfter a few beers, we headed to the bathroom, which was also a unique experience. And the bathrooms here have glass walls... but it's not boringAfter heading back down, we walked around the shops and souvenir stalls. We noticed that they have some fun attractions for selfie lovers (like a photo of a tourist on a parachute).
You'll be flying over the city in this photo...I have to say, the only thing that keeps me from giving this place a full 5 stars is the overpriced entry fee. But overall, it's definitely worth a visit. We enjoyed the morning visit, and I'm sure the evening views would be just as stunning. If you're looking for a unique experience in Bangkok, the Pixel building is definitely worth checking out.
